Mirotice – Discover Cultural History and the Alšova Trail

Mirotice reveals its character particularly through the combination of art, remembrance, and historic buildings. Around the square and on the northern edge of the town, you can discover evidence of various eras. In addition, there is the Alšova Trail, whose stations present the region’s historical, natural, and archaeological features. This makes it possible to enjoy a cultural and active stay without the individual experiences repeating the same theme.

Art and Remembrance at the Memorial

The Mikoláš Aleš and Matěj Kopecký Memorial is located in the birthplace of Mikoláš Aleš near the square in Mirotice. Visitors can learn about the life and work of the painter Mikoláš Aleš and the puppeteer Matěj Kopecký. The site thus combines two different artistic perspectives in a historic building.

A prior telephone appointment at 382 229 101 is required for a visit. At weekends and on public holidays, visits are currently not possible for operational reasons. This regulation is therefore part of the specific planning for a visit to the memorial and should be taken into account before the intended date.

Church and Historic Houses near the Square

The present appearance of the Church of St. Giles dates back to a pseudo-Romanesque reconstruction carried out between 1870 and 1872. Next to the church stands a Baroque bell tower, built between 1753 and 1756 to replace an older wooden structure. The church towers frequently appear in drawings by Mikoláš Aleš. Thus, architectural history and the memory of an artist associated with Mirotice come together at the same building.

The building known as Dům zvaný Rytířský, a Renaissance house probably dating from the 17th century, also stands near the square. Its painted façades with stucco decorations have been preserved. The Měšťanský dům is likewise located near the square. It dates from the early 17th century, has a mansard roof, and features a Baroque-reworked façade with an attic and stucco decorations. Those interested in architectural forms will therefore find different historical layers in a small area with a common theme.

Jewish Cemetery and Chapel in Zářečí

The Jewish cemetery Židovský hřbitov in Mirotice was established before 1647. Approximately 250 gravestones have survived there to this day. The cemetery is locked; upon request, the Mirotice municipal office provides access. Visiting it is therefore organized differently from viewing historic buildings that are freely accessible, and access should be requested in advance accordingly.

On the northern edge of Mirotice, in the Zářečí district, stands the Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk. The Baroque chapel was built in the second half of the 18th century. Together with the Jewish cemetery and the buildings near the square, it broadens the perspective on the town’s religious and architectural history.

Hiking and Mountain Biking on the Alšova Trail

The Alšova Trail is suitable for hiking and mountain biking. Its stations present the region’s historical, natural, and archaeological features. It therefore offers an independent way to experience Mirotice and its surroundings: while the buildings and memorial sites primarily bring local history to life, the trail directs attention to several different topics along its stations. You can therefore divide your stay between culture and physical activity according to your interests.
