Hrbov – Nature, History and Trails at Hrádeček

Hrbov combines a remarkable historical site with a natural monument, a small cultural attraction, and opportunities for cycling and hiking. This creates a destination where historical discoveries and landscape experiences can be combined in different ways.

Velký Hrádeček: Historical Traces and Distinctive Ramparts

Velký Hrádeček is a Late Hallstatt-period hillfort covering an area of 0.55 hectares. Here, the term refers to a historic fortified site. The site is particularly striking because of its preserved outline: stone ramparts mark it along a total length of 395 metres and reach a height of 3 to 5 metres on the outside.

There is a special naming connection to bear in mind when finding your way around: in the literature, Velký Hrádeček is also predominantly referred to as Hrbov. If you are looking for the historic site, you may therefore encounter both names.

The Hrádeček Natural Monument

The Hrádeček Natural Monument is located in the cadastral areas of Třebanice and Hrbov u Lhenic. Its area includes a 700-metre-long breakthrough valley of the Melhutka stream. It lies in the massif of Velký Hrádeček, at 571 metres, and Malý Hrádeček, at 509 metres. Rocky slopes and small scree slopes characterise this section and give the natural area a distinctly different dimension from the demarcated historic site.

Hrádeček can be reached by car without access restrictions; an access road lies within 250 metres of the site. During a stay in Hrbov, you can therefore deliberately include this natural area in your daily plans without having to separate the historical and landscape aspects.

Niche Chapel and Trail Connections

Another cultural monument is the niche chapel of Hrbov. It is registered as a protected cultural monument under registration number ÚKSP 31809/3-3575 and stands near the road from Hrbov to Lhenice. Its gable features volutes and an Eye of God motif. This makes the chapel a clearly identifiable architectural detail among the local attractions, even if your focus is not exclusively on historic sites.

For active exploration, a hike from Hrbov to Velký Hrádeček is a good option. The route initially follows a red-marked trail towards Třebanice and then continues along forest paths to the hillfort. The route therefore connects the starting point of Hrbov, the direction of Třebanice and the historic destination in a specifically described sequence.

Cycling for Different Day Plans

Hrbov can also be included in a cycling loop. The Hrbovská bašta stop is located on the “Netolickou oborou” cycling circuit. The route is approximately 20 kilometres long and is considered suitable for families with children. Those planning a shared active day will find a cycling loop here; those more interested in history and landscapes can focus on Velký Hrádeček, the natural monument and the hike.

Hrbov is therefore suitable as a search destination for travellers who want to include not just a single attraction, but several clearly distinct experiences in their plans.
