Netolice between History, Cycling Routes and Pond Landscape
Netolice: History, Trails and Water
If you would like to combine culture, landscape and active exploration during your stay in the Czech Republic, Netolice offers several different ways to do so. Historic buildings shape the townscape, while the Historická krajina Netolicko educational trail and the cycle route of the same name turn attention to the surrounding area. Podroužek Pond also adds a destination by the water. This means the themes can be explored at different paces: a walk can begin at the cultural monuments, while the cycle route and pond open up further focal points for your stay.
Cultural Monuments with Their Own History
A special place is the Přemyslid hillfort on Sankt-Ján Hill. The massive ramparts of the former princely administrative castle have been preserved there. At the Netolice Archaeopark, a defensive walkway is also accessible, along with a view over the palisade towards the town. The accessible defensive walkway and the view over the palisade direct visitors' attention both to the historic site and to the present-day town. Kratochvíle Chateau, a Renaissance hunting lodge, lies approximately 2 km northwest of Netolice.
The Muzeum JUDr. Otakara Kudrny is located in the Renaissance building Rožmberský dům in Netolice. Sgraffiti have been preserved on the façades, and the building also has an arcaded front. The collection includes more than 170,000 original historical postcards. The combination of Renaissance architecture and the collection creates a different accent from the churches and the former castle complex. Anyone wishing to explore local history through buildings and pictorial documents will find both here: architectural details and a large number of historical postcards. Two churches complete the cultural picture: The Church of Saint Wenceslas is an originally Gothic building with Romanesque elements dating from the second half of the 13th century. The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was built in the Gothic style in the second half of the 13th century. The two churches therefore create different architectural accents: at Saint Wenceslas, originally Gothic forms meet Romanesque elements, while the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was built in the Gothic style. Their shared period of origin connects the two buildings chronologically without making their forms alike.
Educational Trail, Cycle Route and Podroužek Pond
The approximately 3 km short circular route of the Historická krajina Netolicko educational trail leads to important cultural monuments in Netolice. Along the route, 16 stations provide information on trilingual information panels. The Historická krajina Netolicko cycle route runs through gently rolling terrain on paved paths and can be divided into several shorter stages. This allows different route lengths to be incorporated into your own daily plans without requiring a new route. The paved paths and gentle terrain give the route a clear framework, while dividing it into stages leaves open whether the route fits into the day as a longer outing or in shorter sections.
For a stay with another focal point, Podroužek Pond is a good option: The body of water covers an area of 30 ha and is used for swimming. The former Rožmberk Netolice game reserve is also part of the historic landscape. It extended west of the edge of Netolice across the present-day administrative areas of Netolice, Lhenice, Hracholusky and Malovice and was historically, scenically and from a heritage-conservation perspective unique.
A specific event date is also part of the town's more recent culture: On Saturday, 24 May 2025, the Netolice town celebrations with an old Bohemian craft market took place on Linecká stezka from 10 a.m. For further travel planning, the following places are also available to choose from: Mahouš, Borova Lada, Buk Pod Boubínem, Stachy, Vimperk, Dvory U Lažišť, Němčice and Krtely.
