Holasovice: UNESCO World Heritage with its own village structure

Holašovice has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 1998. The village is particularly characterized by its preserved buildings, the large rectangular village green and the finely stucco-decorated façades of the so-called South Bohemian Folk Baroque. The Holašovice UNESCO complex comprises 23 listed farmsteads with a total of 120 buildings. The complex is centered around the large rectangular village green. The preserved buildings were shaped by alterations made in the 19th century and feature the distinctive forms of the so-called South Bohemian Folk Baroque, with finely stucco-decorated façades. This allows the architecture to be viewed in context across several buildings rather than only in a single structure.

Smithy and Chapel as Historical Stops

The historic smithy in Holašovice is mentioned in writing as early as 1713. In 2018, it was renovated to restore its original appearance and original purpose. For your tour of discovery, it therefore combines a specific historical date with the later restoration of an earlier state.

On the north side of the village green stands the Holašovice chapel dedicated to Saint John of Nepomuk. An authentic founding inscription has been preserved on a stone tablet set into the rear wall near the ground, to the left of the altar mensa. The brothers Bartoloměj and Josef Pimiskorn had the chapel built at their own expense. Its location on the village green and the preserved inscription give the chapel a firmly established place in the village’s history.

The Holašovice stone circle is a modern replica of megalithic sites in Bohemia. It consists of 25 large stones, including a central stone, a menhir. The stone circle thus complements the historic village architecture with a younger, deliberately designed element with its own distinct character.

The Selské slavnosti take place in Holašovice every year on the penultimate weekend in July. On this occasion, more than 230 traditional and non-traditional crafts from Bohemia, Moravia and Slovakia are demonstrated. If you would like to plan your trip around living traditions and craft demonstrations, this weekend is the clearest recurring annual event date in the village.

For a meal, the Holašovice restaurant is located on the west side of the village green in Farmstead No. 18 and invites you to lunch or dinner.
