Discover Báňovice: Chapel, Větrník and Village History

Báňovice combines historic village features with distinctive landscape landmarks. Báňovice was first mentioned in written records in 1327. A neo-Gothic chapel from the second half of the 19th century stands on the village square. It is dedicated to Saint Florian, the patron saint of firefighters. The chapel is therefore one of the village’s visible historical points of reference. Its construction period gives the village centre a clear historical accent.

In front of the school stands a granite stone wayside marker, probably dating from the late 17th century. In 1946, a stone monument was erected in Báňovice to mark the 50th anniversary of the school. It commemorates the headmaster Zdeněk Papoušek, who served as headmaster in Báňovice. Papoušek was murdered by fascists in a concentration camp in Kassel. There are also eight crosses in the cadastral area of Báňovice. The wayside marker, monument and crosses distribute the village’s commemorative sites across several locations.

Větrník, Jalovčí and Traditional Stories

At 571 metres, Větrník is the highest point in Báňovice. Today, only slight relief traces in the form of rises in the terrain remain from Větrník Castle Ruins. A military lookout tower once stood on Větrník; this historical function belongs to the village’s traditional past and does not describe a present-day structure. The high point thus connects the experience of the landscape with the question of what remains visible from former structures.

Remains of former mining pits have been preserved in Jalovčí Forest. Zámecký kopec is also associated with the belief that a treasure is hidden there. The pilgrimage in Báňovice takes place on the Sunday after the feast day of Saint Florian, 4 May. The village feast is celebrated on the Sunday after 15 October.
