Between Silver Mining, Church Art and Landscapes

Planá U Mariánských Lázní combines an unusually rich urban history with water-based and nature experiences. The Šlik legacy is particularly impressive: the Štola Ondřej Šlik was established at the end of the 16th century during the heyday of silver mining in Planá and its surroundings. The underground workings are just under 200 metres long. The historical context also includes coin minting. After the mint in Jáchymov was closed, it was relocated to Planá. This means that the history of the town can be explored not only through individual buildings, but also through its connection between mining and monetary history.

Historic Buildings with a History of Their Own

The Church of St Peter and Paul is Planá’s oldest listed building. It preserves 13th-century frescoes and a rare Romanesque portal with an arch frieze. After extensive renovation, it now serves as a wedding and concert hall; during the summer months, it is also used as a gallery for modern art. Medieval furnishings and contemporary cultural use thus meet in the same building.

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary also tells several chapters of the town’s history. It was originally built as a late Romanesque church in the second quarter of the 13th century, was structurally developed further until the 20th century, and acquired much of its present appearance through two Baroque rebuilding phases in the 18th century. Together with the neighbouring rectory, it has been protected as a cultural monument since 1958. Its tower houses a bell more than 500 years old. The Galerie ve věži was founded in 1995 in the previously unused tower of this Baroque church.

Water Experiences and Practical Orientation

The Koupaliště Planá outdoor swimming pool is located in a 3.5-hectare area and has a water surface of 10,790 square metres. Families with children can use a children’s paddling pool with attractions. Accessible sanitary facilities for wheelchair users are also part of the amenities. Free parking spaces are available near the swimming pool. These specific features make the pool an independent factor when choosing a destination if, alongside culture, spending time by the water is part of the desired holiday itinerary.

Walks Among Marshes, Forests and Castle Ruins

The educational trail “Expedice do historie země Horní Falc a Západní Čechy” extends through the surroundings of Planá and Chodová Planá, as well as Massenricht in Upper Palatinate near Hirschau.
