Discover Ejpovice: Nature Reserve, History and Waterscapes

Ejpovice amid nature, water and local history

Ejpovice is a destination for travelers who want to combine experiences in nature with an unusual history. Its highlights range from a paleontological site dating from the Lower Ordovician, through the remains of Hrádek, to traces of iron processing. There is also the Ejpovice Reservoir, publicly accessible green spaces and a regional cycling route. This allows you to shape your stay according to your interests—cultural and historical, scenic or active—without reducing the town to just one theme.

A nature reserve with a rare geological history

The Ejpovické útesy Nature Reserve covers 1.9483 hectares and has been protected since 15 April 1993. It preserves a paleontological site with fauna from the Lower Ordovician. Particularly remarkable is its classification as the world's oldest known autochthonous occurrence of organisms from the surf zone. For your travel planning, this means that the focus is not merely on a landscape designation, but on a clearly defined geological and paleontological theme. Those who want to understand nature not only through present-day landscapes, but also through their formation and the worlds of life preserved from the past, will find a distinctive focus here.

Hrádek and the traces of iron processing

Hrádek, also known as Starý zámek, stood opposite the village of Klabava near Ejpovice and was the seat of almost all the Lords of Ejpovice. Only a small part of the castle masonry has survived to this day. At the same time, the name “K Starému zámku” has remained in use. This combination of a traditional place name and the few surviving wall remnants makes the history of the site more of a search for traces than that of a fully preserved castle complex.

Another historical accent emerged in the 17th century, when intensive iron ore mining began in Ejpovice. A water-powered hammer mill was also built there to serve the Horomyslice ironworks. The town's history can therefore also be viewed from the perspective of earlier raw-material extraction and processing.

Chapels, music and technical cultural monuments

The Chapel of St. Wenceslas was built in 1904 and consecrated to Saint Wenceslas on 28 September 1904. Every Sunday, services are held in the Chapel of St. Wenceslas in Ejpovice, along with frequent concerts featuring classical and Gothic music. Ejpovice also has a village chapel on HlavnĂ Street. The cultural picture is complemented by the VodnĂ tunely u Ejpovic, which are considered a technical cultural monument attraction. In the town, you will therefore encounter sacred tradition, music and technical history as distinct, clearly identifiable facets.

Reservoir, green spaces and cycling route

The municipal plan designates the Klabava Valley, the Ejpovice Reservoir and the adjacent forests as important areas of publicly accessible green space. The Ejpovice Reservoir is also listed there as a significant body of water with recreational potential. Regional Cycling Route 2124 runs through Ejpovice. This gives you a clearly differentiated choice of themes for your planning: you can explore the town through its nature reserve and waterscape, delve into its local and industrial history, or consider the cycling route as a travel purpose in its own right.
