Skomelno: Educational Trail, Oak Tree and Historic Traces

Skomelno lies at the foot of the wooded Zbirožské Mountains, north of Mount Radeč. The village combines a themed educational trail with distinctive natural features and historic traces that come together to create a variety of experiences. The natural features also differ in their form and location: The educational trail leads to a tree at the edge of the forest, while the rock and pond form separate landscape features in the surrounding area. Radeč Nature Park extends the connection with the landscape beyond the individual trail.

A Circular Educational Trail Connected to the Landscape

Putování s Dubíky is an approximately 5 km circular educational trail starting and ending in Skomelno. The trail covers Radeč, Mitterwald and the Radnická sloj. The local educational trail also leads to Skomelský dub, an over 600-year-old oak tree at the edge of the forest near Skomelno. The trail thus combines landscape themes with a specific natural monument and gives a stay in Skomelno a clearly recognizable thematic focus.

Rock, Forest and Distinctive Natural Features

In the surrounding area, the approach to Věž u Skomelna begins at the football pitch in Skomelno. It follows a forest path towards Lhota pod Radčem. Věž u Skomelna is an 8-metre-high rhyolite rock with permanently installed climbing protection equipment. For travel planning, this site should therefore be distinguished as a separate, nearby described landscape feature from the circular educational trail in Skomelno.

The surrounding landscape also includes the proximity of Radeč Nature Park and Skomelák Pond near Skomelno. Skomelský dub adds a long history to this landscape: In the 2014 Tree of the Year election, it came second. Together with the educational trail, this creates a picture of wooded mountains, individual distinctive features and a trail that links several of these themes.

Historic Traces in the Village Landscape

The first written record of Skomelno dates from 1379. From 1379 onwards, Otík ze Skomelna was among the residents of Skomelno. In 1631, 252 years after the first mention, Skomelno came into the possession of Petr Příchovský z Příchovic.

The northern arm of a water-filled moat remains from the former fortification in Skomelno. In the village centre, there is also a monument to the victims of the First World War on a bend in the road. On 17 July 2026, the Skomelno Volunteer Fire Brigade held a traditional dance event with music and dancing in Skomelno.
