Volduchy: Church History and Fossils in the Surrounding Area
Accommodation in Volduchy
Volduchy lies about 4 km northeast of Rokycany. Parts of the village extend through a valley on both sides of the Voldušský potok and along the northern slope of Plecháč; to the east rises Chlum, at 561 m. The village’s history includes the Church of St Bartholomew and a Pietà ensemble, while the palaeontological protected areas of Kašparův vrch and Vosek lie to the southwest, in the surrounding area. Here, two distinct perspectives meet: architectural history in the village and geological traces in the surrounding area.
Church of St Bartholomew and Pietà
The Church of St Bartholomew stands in the eastern part of Volduchy, on the road to Nesvačily and Liteň. Its Gothic origins date back to the late 14th century. After it burned down in 1817, it acquired its present Late Baroque appearance during restoration in 1822. Its architectural history thus brings together medieval beginnings and a later renovation, giving the village’s history a tangible architectural connection.
The Pietà ensemble stands on the eastern slope by the church’s presbytery. It bears an inscription with the year 1729. The church and the ensemble are designated cultural monuments of the Czech Republic. A cultural-history itinerary can therefore include both the church building and an individual work of art among the subjects to explore in Volduchy.
Fossils and countryside southwest of the village
Nearby, southwest of Volduchy, lie the palaeontological protected areas of Kašparův vrch and Vosek. Siliceous, spherical concretions known as “rokycanské kuličky” are common in the Vosek area. There are also numerous well-preserved fossils, including trilobites, molluscs, echinoderms and brachiopods. These geological features offer a different focus from the village’s architectural history: here, the emphasis is on the geological history of the surrounding area.
For orientation, it is useful to distinguish between the locations: the church and Pietà are in Volduchy, while the two protected areas lie to the southwest. The countryside thus offers a distinct natural-history area of interest, without conflating the protected areas with sights in the village.
Traditions, concerts and theatre
The Bartolomějská and Hřebenářská pilgrimages are traditionally celebrated in Volduchy on the last Sunday in August. The Voldušská pilgrimage was scheduled to take place in the village centre from 9:00 on 29 August 2026 until 23:59 on 30 August 2026. Check the relevant dates for future editions.
Kultura Volduchy presents concerts and theatre in an intimate setting: the stage is close, and a glass of wine is offered after the performance. Individual performances and dates vary. If you would like to plan a cultural evening, check the current programme for your travel dates. This lets you plan your stay around a specific event, rather than only around the permanent cultural monuments.
