Radkov – Hradisko, Třebůvka and Historical Traces

Radkov combines archaeological traces, historic buildings and marked cycle routes into a destination with a distinctive character. Particularly impressive is the Radkovské hradisko: the site tells of the town’s medieval history while also providing a direct connection to the surrounding landscape and cultural heritage.

The Radkovské hradisko and Its Medieval Traces

The Radkovské hradisko is a significant archaeological site dating from the Middle Ages and High Middle Ages in the cadastral area of Gruna, south of Radkov. The types recorded there include a fortification, a fortified manor and a hilltop settlement. The Radkovské hradisko is over 200 m long and 70 m wide. The bailey of the “Radkovské hradisko” was protected by a 60 m long curtain wall 280 cm thick. A ditch carved into the rock is still visible in the terrain from the fortified settlement of Radkov and its fortifications; it is up to 30 m wide. Those interested in the development of historic settlements will therefore find here not just a place name, but several surviving forms of fortification and settlement. Radkov’s history dates back to the second half of the 13th century. At that time, the fortified small town of Radkov was founded with a small castle seat. The archaeological designations and visible traces in the terrain are thus connected with a settlement history that shaped the town over the course of centuries.

The Třebůvka, the Mill and Preserved Village Structures

Radkov lies on the Třebůvka River. The Dolní Mill, Fleckův mlýn, is part of the town’s historical character and was first mentioned in 1680 under the name “Rottendorf mühle – Radkovský mlýn”. In 1835, it is recorded as a masonry mill building with two wheels. These wheels were driven by a millrace on the right bank of the Třebůvka. The townscape of Radkov also includes original homesteads and farmsteads preserved to varying degrees. Preserved bell towers are also recorded in Radkov and neighboring Rozstání. These various testimonies complement the history of the hradisko with everyday architectural and village structures.

Two Marked Cycle Routes with Different Route Profiles

The marked routes provide clear guidance for exploring the area by bicycle. Cycle Route No. 506 runs from Moravská Třebová to Městečko Trnávka via Linhartice, Radkov and Rozstání. Radkov is therefore located on a signposted connection between several towns. Cycle Route No. 4043 has a different starting point: it runs from the Radkovské hradisko via Gruna and Žipotín to Nad Svojanovem. Route planning therefore offers both a connection through Radkov and a route with a direct connection to the archaeological site.
