Opatov: Ponds, Forest Paths and Medieval Traces

Opatov is a destination for travelers who want to combine nature observation, walks and historical discoveries. The landscape is characterized by ponds and forests, while churches and a chapel reveal several centuries of local history.

Ponds, forests and a diverse birdlife

The Opatovské rybníky form an important biocorridor for the migration and spread of bird species and other species between Moravia and Bohemia. Around 220 bird species have so far been recorded in the Opatovské rybníky system. For travelers who want to experience the landscape rather than merely pass through it, this is a notable difference from a stay focused exclusively on culture.

The surroundings are varied even beyond birdwatching. The landscape around Opatov, characterized by ponds and forests, is suitable for walks, cycling and mushroom picking. Hvězda is the largest and oldest pond in the vicinity of Opatov. Králova zahrada lies in the source area of the Zádolský Stream in the cadastral territory of Opatov. In early spring, the site is characterized by a mass occurrence of spring snowflakes.

Church history with Romanesque and Gothic traces

The Church of St Anthony in Opatov dates from the first half of the 13th century. Its tower has a Romanesque base and was built around 1240. The chancel dates from the first half of the 14th century and is Gothic. This makes it possible to trace, in a single historic building, how different periods left their architectural marks.

Another historical trace is the Chapel of St John Nepomuk. It was built in 1722 by the priest Matěj Peška. The construction dates are far apart: the medieval Church of St Anthony was followed by the Chapel of St John Nepomuk, built in 1722. Together with the Church of St Anthony, it forms a cultural focus that clearly differs from the natural experiences around the ponds and in the forest. Travelers with different interests can therefore explore Opatov both for its landscape and its architectural history.

Railway station, forest path and hiking opportunities

Two different railway station details are relevant when planning arrival and excursions. Opatov railway station was connected to the Praha–Brno line and began operating in 1846. A blue-marked hiking trail from Semanín railway station to Svitavy runs near Králova zahrada. From Semanín railway station, Králova zahrada can be reached on foot via a fortified forest path in less than one kilometer.

The municipal restaurant with bowling, called Opatovská hospoda, is also useful for local orientation.
