Chornice – Church, Trails and Special Places

Chornice is a destination for travelers who want to combine cultural and historical discoveries with walks, cycling tours and distinctive landscape features. Between St. Lawrence Church, the pilgrimage site of Holubí studánka and the trails around Hušák, a varied picture emerges that is not limited to a single attraction.

Church, Fortress Traces and Rural Architectural Heritage

St. Lawrence Church is a Baroque-style rural parish church of medieval origin dating from the early 14th century. The church grounds include a late Gothic tower with a tiered pyramidal roof. Two Baroque statues of St. John of Nepomuk complete the historic ensemble. The tower and the statues reveal different architectural and artistic periods within the same church grounds. The church stands on the site of a former fortress; surviving masonry from its former outline forms part of the cemetery wall. A visit can therefore be understood not only as a tour of the church, but also as a glimpse into the town’s older history.

Polní mlýn lies on the southeastern edge of Chornice, outside the town. Polní mlýn is located about 0.7 km from St. Lawrence Church on the road to Biskupice. The romantic mill and the niche chapel standing opposite it across the road add a second, differently charactered point of interest to the local architectural and cultural history.

Holubí studánka and Hušák

In the vicinity of Chornice, Holubí studánka is a pilgrimage site. The abundant spring emerges from a side section of the chapel below Hušák Hill. A blue-marked hiking trail begins at Chornice railway station and leads to the Pod Hušákem trail junction. An unusual historical trace is the almost completed but unfinished highway construction route. It runs straight through the fields southward to the airfield near Chornice. Beyond the airfield, the unfinished highway route continues to a spur of Hušák Mountain; however, the extensive earthworks required there were not completed. This route is therefore one of the visible but unfinished interventions in the landscape and differs clearly from the town’s historical and nature-oriented points of interest.
