Hrádek – Nature and History in the Orlické Mountains

Hrádek lies at the foot of the Orlické Mountains and is naturally embedded in the surrounding landscape. Hrádek has been documented in writing since 29 August 1432. The present-day village was founded in 1691 by Jan Bedřich Trautmansdorf. Another historical trace leads to the Hrádek mill, Kubasův mlýn, for which a written record from 1544 has been preserved. These dates represent different stages in the development of the village and give a walk through Hrádek a chronological framework.

The history of the 20th century includes an event of particular significance: in February 1945, a death march involving approximately 3,000 prisoners passed through Hrádek. The village’s history therefore encompasses not only its founding and early written records, but also the memory of a harrowing period.

Landscape and Distinctive Landmarks

In the green areas around Hrádek, the Štěpánka spring emerges from the ground. Štěpánka is also a pleasant place to rest at the edge of the forest near Hrádek. A three-metre descent from a blue-marked trail leads there. On Hrádek’s imagined small village square stands a monumental linden tree, giving the village a clear and unusual landmark.

Hiking Destinations Around Hrádek

Husí Krk is a local biocorridor along the Řetovka stream. A walk of approximately 5 km runs through the area and takes about 2 hours. In the left part of the Husí Krk valley lies Babí skála, a marl-rock cliff. The Hrádecké Valley lies below Hrádek and is part of the Orlice Nature Park; this section is crossed by a blue-marked hiking trail.

Another unusual destination is Partyzánská jeskyně. It is a passage of approximately 9 m in length that is easily accessible and of pseudokarst origin. It was formed by the weathering of marl rock in almost vertical fissures. After climbing Andrlův chlum, the hiking route continues comfortably over gently rolling terrain. This offers different ways of experiencing the area side by side: a walk that can be easily planned by duration, geological features, and a gentler route section after an ascent.
