Discover Džbánov

Džbánov combines a long local history with a green town centre, good orientation for excursions, and a signposted cycling route. The public green spaces in the central area are located around a body of water; at the same time, mature solitary trees shape the streetscape. In this way, Džbánov brings together history, landscape, and active pursuits as different themes, without defining the town by just one type of visit.

Local history with unusual details

Džbánov was founded around the middle of the 13th century. The first “official” mentions date from 1292. The town’s name also reflects its development: Čban first became Čbánov before the present-day name Džbánov emerged. In the 14th century, Džbánov and its surroundings belonged to Zbraslav Monastery. The Old Bohemian noble family Džbánovští ze Džbánova also originated from the town. Its coat of arms is particularly vivid: it showed a red shield with two crossed swords, their handles pointing upwards. Three silver ostrich feathers served as the crest. Visitors who want to discover not only the landscape but also the region’s past will therefore find specific points of connection here rather than merely a collection of dates.

Green town centre and transition to the landscape

The public green spaces are concentrated mainly in the central area of Džbánov around a body of water. Numerous mature solitary trees are part of the streetscape and give the town a clearly structured appearance. At the edges, gardens and designated green areas form the transition between the built-up settlement and the open landscape.

Getting there and cycling

The ČSAD Ústí nad Orlicí, a.s. bus service on route 700908 connects Vysoké Mýto, Džbánov, Bučina, Příluka, and Nové Hrady. In addition, the Džbánov u Vysokého Mýta stop is located on ČD railway line no. 016 between Choceň and Litomyšl. It is approximately 1.4 kilometres from the town centre. These two details describe different transport connections for getting there and should be considered separately when planning a journey. For active days, a dense network of paved service roads is available and used for cycling tourism. A signposted cycling route from Vysoké Mýto to Nové Hrady passes through Javorník and Džbánov, continuing to Knířov and Vysoké Mýto. The route is approximately ten kilometres long and moderately difficult. On a large part of the route, descents and climbs alternate. The route therefore has a clearly described sporting character: it is suitable for anyone looking for a moderately difficult stage with varied terrain during their stay.

A small town with its own infrastructure

Džbánov also offers a specific place to go for quieter hours. The municipal library has more than 1,000 books. Thousands of additional volumes from the Vysoké Mýto Municipal Library are also available through interlibrary loan; the library offers free internet access. This expands the options available locally beyond nature and cycling and makes the library an independent part of the town’s structure.
