History and special traces in Ostřešany

Ostřešany combines a long local history with small, unusual discoveries in the landscape. The oldest known written mention dates back to 23 December 1340. The former name of the village, Wostřešany, also tells part of its development: it probably originated from the term „vostrých střech“, referring to the numerous pointed roofs found there.

A distinctive cultural feature is House No. 11. Its façade bears original frescoes by the painter Eva Filemonová; the house is also associated with the artist. For a walk with an interest in regional history, several smaller monuments also form part of the village landscape. The Ostřešany war memorial to those who fell in both world wars was created in 1934 by the sculptor Miloslav Baše and the architect Karel Řepa. It stands in the corner of a paved square in a small park in front of the school and depicts an oversized statue of a kneeling wounded soldier. The small park in front of the school, the paved square, and the oversized figure are all part of the memorial’s appearance, as is its creation in 1934. A cast-iron cross on a sandstone pedestal with a wrought-iron fence dates from the late 19th century.

Ponds, paths, and destinations in the surrounding area

The landscape of Ostřešany is defined by a cascade of four ponds. A new path with a bound surface leads around the ponds. This makes it possible to focus your stay on the immediate surroundings and their waters. Those who prefer to travel by bicycle will find opportunities for cycling tours around Ostřešany. A 700-metre-long cycle path connects Ostřešany and Nemošice. The pond cascade and the cycle path to Nemošice offer two different spaces for movement: a loop around the waters in Ostřešany and a 700-metre-long connection between the two villages.

The nearby village of Nemošice is home to the Nemošická stráň natural monument, which makes a suitable excursion destination from Ostřešany. Another nature-related attraction can be found in an old sand pit near Ostřešany: a nesting site of sand martins has been monitored there since 1981.
