Pernštejnskými rybníky educational trail route

The Pernštejnskými rybníky educational trail route offers an extensive hiking experience. The circular route is approximately 9 km long and runs mostly along unpaved paths. It also includes about 200 m along a forest path and 1.5 km along a road. The different sections give the route a distinctly varied character without turning the circular route into a purely road-based stretch.

In terms of its content, the route follows ponds dating from the 15th and 20th centuries and crosses their dams. This brings nature and history together directly along the trail. You will learn how sophisticated water-engineering structures served fish farmers over the centuries. This historical arc is precisely what makes the educational trail interesting: the ponds represent not only bodies of water, but also a form of fish farming that developed over a long period of time.

Opatovický Canal: water engineering and water tourism

A second focus is the Opatovický Canal. It was built from 1498 to 1521 to supply the network of fishponds originally established by Vilém z Pernštejna. The canal is therefore a historic water-engineering structure with a clearly described function within the region's fish-farming system.

A simple full-day trip is possible on the 32.69 km-long Opatovický Canal at a speed of no more than 5 km/h. The canal is also used for water tourism at difficulty level ZWB. Fishing is possible there as well, specifically in a non-trout water. Those who want to focus their trip more strongly on water and historic landscapes will find a distinct area of interest here alongside the educational trail route.

Cultural heritage and playful discoveries

A bell tower stands in the centre of Neratov. As a compact cultural point of reference, it complements the area's broader landscape and water-engineering themes. Another significant landscape feature is the Bohdanečská Alej k Neratovu. It is designated as a VKP and is historically and geographically connected with the Opatovický Canal. The avenue thus brings together the character of the landscape and the history of the canal at another location near Neratov.

For a shorter exploration, there is the supplementary cipher game “Sumec na suchu”. Its themes include fish, ponds and fish farming. The game's circular course is less than four kilometres long and can be completed in about two hours. Alongside the approximately 9 km-long educational trail, this provides a considerably more compact format in which the region's themes are explored playfully.
