Mokošín

Mokošín combines a geological cycle route with several unusual cultural landmarks. For visitors who do not want to limit an excursion to a single destination, this offers two distinct ways to explore the area: a route with information panels and a series of crosses, a wayside shrine, and a statue. The connection between MAGEO and Křemen is particularly distinctive, making the area interesting both for active exploration and for taking a closer look at its religious and cultural landmarks.

MAGEO: Mokošín as a stop on an educational cycle route

MAGEO begins at Přelouč railway station and passes through Mokošín, which is one of its thirteen information-panel stations. The geological educational cycle route is 29 kilometres long in total and lies within the Železné hory National Geopark. Its character comes from the combination of cycling, geological education, and individual stations along the route. Those who get to know Mokošín through MAGEO can therefore view the village both as a specific section of a longer route and as part of the geopark’s thematic framework.

This distinction is helpful when planning a trip: MAGEO represents an active, information-oriented exploration, while the local cultural landmarks invite quieter observation and reflection. Both can be connected in the way Mokošín is experienced without reducing the individual stations to a single type of attraction.

Wayside Shrine, Cross, and the Statue of Mokoš

In Mokošín, the wayside shrine “Boží muka” takes the form of a stone cross on a pedestal with a Madonna. There is also a depiction of the Lamb of God beneath the cross. These details give the religious landmark several clearly recognizable elements and make it interesting for visitors who pay attention to small, place-specific motifs.

Another distinctive feature is the statue of Mokoš. It was carved in 2007 from a linden tree described as “Slavic” and was created based on a design by woodcarver Miroslav Landovský. People place fruit as offerings and light candles at the statue. This makes visible not only the design of the figure but also a form of interaction with this place that has been described as continuing into the present day. In the western part of Mokošín, there is also a cross within a larger metal enclosure.

Křemen and the View over the Surroundings

The summit of Křemen lies at an elevation of 258 metres above sea level. From Křemen, there is a view of Přelouč; in good visibility, it extends as far as the Krkonoše Mountains. This gives Mokošín, in addition to the cycle route and religious landmarks, a clearly defined viewpoint. The exact viewing distance depends on visibility conditions, while the elevation of the summit is clearly established. Those who want to combine the landscape with details of the village will find a different focus here than at the MAGEO information panels.
