Veliny between the cycle path, educational trail and wooden architecture

Veliny brings together a historic church, an educational trail with an unusual route and a short cycle path to Borohrádek within a compact area. If you would like to combine culture with activity during your stay, you will find a variety of experiences here: the Veliny–Borohrádek cycle path is 4.5 kilometres long and connects the two towns. It is suitable for cyclists, pedestrians and inline skaters. Part of this route is also included in the educational trail of the knight Velinga.

Educational trail of the knight Velinga

The educational trail of the knight Velinga runs through almost all of Veliny, making it more closely integrated into the town than a short walk around just a single viewpoint. Its layout is important to bear in mind when planning your visit: the educational trail does not form a closed loop. On the western side of Veliny, it leads into the forest to the remains of a former fortress.

Scattered along the educational trail are elements for play and learning. As a result, alongside information about the surrounding area, the route also features individual stations with an active character. Where the educational trail follows a section of the Veliny–Borohrádek cycle path, the two themes can be combined spatially without turning it into a loop. At the “U čtyř pánů” rest area, there is also a wooden shelter with seating.

St. Nicholas Church and historical details

One of Veliny’s cultural highlights is St. Nicholas Church. It was built in 1752 as a wooden log church with a shingle roof. The complex also includes a wooden mortuary chapel built into the cemetery wall. The church, cemetery and mortuary chapel form a unified historic ensemble.

From spring to autumn, visitors can look into St. Nicholas Church through a wrought-iron gate. This explicitly describes a glimpse inside, not regular access to the interior. The sacristy contains a so-called Josephine coffin dating from around the 1780s. The approximate date remains part of the historical context. Today, in addition to its original purpose, St. Nicholas Church also serves as a cultural and social centre.

Other local memorials include the “Obětem 1914–1919” monument to those who fell in the First World War. It is designed as a stone mound monument, with a commemorative plaque set into a square plinth. The tourist token for St. Nicholas Church sold by the municipality, bearing the number 1396, offers a small, tangible memento to discover.

Near Veliny lies Tábor Mlýnek in a quiet wooded area. It is a complex consisting of cabins. The site complements the impressions of the built-up town with a setting in the forest.
