Trhová Kamenice: Museum, Nature and Festivals

Trhová Kamenice is a destination for travelers who want to combine history, distinctive landscapes and living traditions. The town offers more than just a string of individual sights: an unusual museum building, former quarries, protected meadows and recurring festivals give a stay a range of different themes.

Unusual history in the town center

The Trhová Kamenice Museum is housed in a former fishpond castle. The building was converted into a parish house in the Baroque style and now houses a museum and exhibition rooms. It is precisely this varied use that makes the site interesting: it shows how a historic building can change its function over time without losing its distinctive architectural origins. The museum building also contains the Haunted Cellar. It is located in the square next to the church and adds a separate, unusual place to the museum visit. Anyone who wants to get to know Trhová Kamenice not only through its representative buildings but also through local stories and peculiar details will find a fitting focus here. The historic fountain is also part of the townscape; it once again characterizes the square in Trhová Kamenice and is fed by running water.

Landscapes between quarries and protected areas

The former granite quarries of Lomy tell the story of a completed phase of quarrying. After extraction ended, the quarries filled with water naturally, and trees grew up around them. This created a landscape in which the former use of the stone remains recognizable, while water and vegetation have since given the area a different character. A significantly more protected natural area is the Zubří Nature Reserve. It includes a matgrass meadow with springs. In its lower areas, peat and wetlands form. The focus here is therefore not a single excursion destination, but a sensitive habitat with clearly recognizable natural structures. Upolínová loučka is also a protected natural monument. The globe flower grows there. The meadow must not be entered. Its protected status is therefore an essential part of the significance of this place and should be taken into account whenever the landscape is considered.

Pilgrimages and festivals throughout the year

A pilgrimage takes place every year in May, on the feast day of the saint, at the pilgrimage chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk. Another event in May is the Trhovokamenická pilgrimage fair on Raisovo náměstí. It takes place before or on the feast day of Saints Philip and James. Together, these events make May a time when religious tradition and local festivities become visible in Trhová Kamenice. On the first Sunday in June from 10 a.m., “Sejdeme se na rynku” invites visitors to the square. Craft markets and a cultural program are part of the event. Anyone who wants to get to know the town through its traditions can thus experience a different side of it than on a visit to its museums or natural areas.
