Raná U Hlinska – Village History and Cycling Routes

Raná U Hlinska combines a clearly recognizable village history with a landscape surrounding Raná, Oldřetice, and Medkovy Kopce. Raná lies at an elevation of 485 m on the Raná stream, which was also known as Černý potok and Dolský potok. The first written mention dates from 1349; at that time, the village was part of the Rychmburk estate. Its historic settlement pattern was shaped by large timber-framed and later masonry farmsteads along the road. This arrangement makes the village structure itself an important part of the local history, not just individual buildings.

The village district of Oldřetice also preserves a characteristic built environment: larger enclosed farmsteads have survived along the stream. Together with the landscape of Raná, Oldřetice, and Medkovy Kopce, this creates a setting characterized by an unspoiled environment and a distinctive atmosphere. St. James and the Village History

In the central part of Raná stands the Church of St. James the Greater complex on a slight rise. The church was originally Gothic and is documented as early as 1350. In 1718, it was remodeled in the Baroque style; later, it acquired its Neo-Gothic appearance. Original historic wall paintings were discovered inside. The complex also includes a wall enclosing the cemetery, an early-18th-century mortuary chapel, and a masonry bell tower dating from 1835.

This historic ensemble is complemented by the Chapel of the Virgin Mary on the village square, dating from 1894. In Raná, Gothic origins, Baroque alterations, Neo-Gothic design, and rural ecclesiastical buildings can be recognized as different historical traces. Another historical trace leads to the stream: three water-powered grain mills and a sawmill once operated there. These facilities belong to the former history of the site's use and should not be understood as businesses operating today.

Cycling Routes and Local Life

Cycling routes No. 18 and 4122 run through the municipality of Raná on Class III roads. Cycling is therefore one of the documented ways to include Raná in a more active travel plan, without any specific distances or travel times being inferred from this.

Local life also includes an outdoor classroom at a one-class primary school for the first stage of primary education with after-school care, as well as the Roman Catholic parish of Raná. Regular services are held there on Sundays at 9:30 a.m. and Fridays at 6:00 p.m.
