Otradov between the Highlands and the Krounka

Otradov brings together landscapes, regional architectural heritage and paths along a stream in a compact area. Landscape and Traditional Architecture

Its location on the hillside and in the valley gives Otradov a clearly discernible landscape structure. St. Bartholomew’s Church and Otradov’s History

Otradov is home to the filial Church of St. Bartholomew, which belongs to the Krouna parish. The church was built in 1349, originally made of wood, and rebuilt after a fire. The site includes a church and a cemetery. This makes it possible to trace, in one place, both the long history of the sacred building and the present-day spatial connection between the church and the cemetery.

The traditional name of the village also points to its past: in a historical church record, Otradov was referred to as “Grunaw inferior”. This designation should not be understood as the village’s current name, but belongs to its historical tradition. Together with the church, it offers another way to explore the history of the village without requiring a large town centre or an extensive museum landscape.

Blažkův mlýn and Cultural Monuments

Otradov’s cultural monuments include Blažkův mlýn and a nearby barn. The historic Blažkův mlýn has been protected as a cultural monument since 1958. Its fittings have been almost completely preserved, including remains of the waterwheel and millrace. These surviving components make the mill easier to understand as evidence of its former use, because they preserve not only the name of a historic building but also point to the technical function of the complex. The nearby barn adds further insight into the village’s rural architecture and working life.

Hiking, Cycling and Trails along the Krounka

Different forms of travel take centre stage in Otradov for active days. A cycling route is marked in the village. In addition, a red-marked hiking trail leads to Otradov and then follows the Krounka River for more than 10 km. Those looking for a longer route along a body of water thus have a specific route indication. Údolí Krounky (Šilinkův důl) is also designated as a moderate hiking route. The two hiking descriptions therefore differ: one trail leads to Otradov and then continues along the river, while Údolí Krounky is a moderate hiking route.

Getting There and Local Life

Otradov can be reached by bus or by train via Krouna station, approximately 1 km away. Local life also includes firefighting sports competitions organised by Otradov’s volunteer fire brigade at the village’s multi-purpose sports grounds.
