Liboměřice – Cycling Routes, Landscapes and Village History

Liboměřice combines easy-to-follow cycling routes with its proximity to the Železné hory Protected Landscape Area and an unusually tangible village history. Anyone looking to combine nature, active pursuits and historical discoveries on a trip to Czechia will find several different points of interest here: a signposted local cycling route, ponds and woodland around the village, as well as reminders of the region’s religious history.

Cycling with two clearly defined route connections

A signposted local cycling route runs through Liboměřice. In addition, Cycle Route 4177 passes through the village and continues to Samařov. Its total length is 37.5 kilometres. When planning an outing, it is important to distinguish between the two: the 37.5 kilometres refer to the entire Route 4177 and not automatically to an individual section within Liboměřice. This allows you to distinguish between a short exploration of the village and its place within a longer route without equating the passage through the village with the total length.

Železné hory, forests and ponds

Liboměřice lies in the immediate vicinity of the Železné hory Protected Landscape Area. There, the landscape can be explored on numerous cycling routes and marked hiking trails. Its character is defined by forests, meadows, ponds, fields and small settlements. In the municipality of Liboměřice, forests cover 26 percent of the area; ponds and other bodies of water cover 2 hectares.

The location of the bodies of water also gives a concrete picture of the surroundings: a small pond lies north of Liboměřice, while larger ponds are situated southwest and east of the village. The area around the village therefore offers a variety of landscapes, from the immediate surroundings to the more extensive routes through the Železné hory. Families with different holiday preferences can thus choose between a cycling route, a marked hiking trail and more peaceful observation of the landscape, without requiring any particular accommodation facilities.

Village history between 1329 and 1781

The founding of the historic village of Liboměřice is believed to date back to 1329. A particularly notable chapter concerns the Medunova barn: until the Toleration Patent was proclaimed in 1781, secret Protestant services were held there. The history of the village is therefore revealed not only through its age, but also through the religious conditions that shaped life in the region before 1781.

Liboměřice is also connected with a significant ecclesiastical decision. People from around sixty villages in the Železné hory area originally wanted to build their church in Liboměřice. Instead, Hradiště was chosen. The approximate number of villages involved and the different final decision make this an independent detail of the region’s history.

Further routes and orientation

One option extending beyond the village is the NS Krajem Chrudimky educational trail. It follows the Chrudimka River from its source to Chrudim, thereby opening up a longer geographical connection along the river. Bus route 620706 is also documented for connecting several places. It links Chrudim, Rabštejnská Lhota, Křižanovice, Liboměřice, Bojanov and Seč.
