Orel: Tři Bubny, St. George and Cycling Route 4177

Orel combines a remarkable local history with a manageable selection of discoveries for cultural and active days. The Tři Bubny hill rises to the north. The Gothic Church of St. George stands there at an elevation of 302 m. At the same time, a cycling route through Orel and Tři Bubny, as well as a disc golf course, leads directly to different ways of getting to know the area. Tři Bubny and the Church of St. George

The Tři Bubny hill is more than just a distinctive elevation north of Orel. The eastern section of its fortification ramparts was declared a natural and historical monument in 1923. By contrast, only slight rises in the terrain remain from the former Orel fortress, on a circular hill more than 30 m across. Except on the northern side, the fortress was surrounded by a moat. The visible traces thus tell of two different historical layers: the fortification ramparts on Tři Bubny and the now only subtly discernible remains of the former Orel fortress.

The Church of St. George was first mentioned in 1349 in a document issued by the first Archbishop of Prague, Arnošt of Pardubice. Inside are 15 stone epitaphs. They commemorate deceased members of the families who owned the Orel estate. This gives a cultural walk around the church specific historical points of reference, rather than presenting it merely as a single building. The church and the houses of Tři Bubny lie at the crossroads of the Chrudim–Řestoky–Chrast and Kunčí–Orel–Kočí roads.

Sculpture, Memorial and Local Remembrance

Historical reminders can also be found in the centre of Orel. The statue of Our Lady of Victory is a Baroque sculpture from the 18th century. A copy of the statue returned to the centre of Orel in 2025. A granite memorial in Orel also bears the names of 16 inhabitants who did not return from the First World War. Together with the church, the epitaphs and the traces of fortifications, this creates a visit that brings art, the history of local rule and commemorative culture together within a compact thematic area.

Cycling and Disc Golf

For a more active day, Cycling Route 4177 passes through Tři Bubny and Orel. The Orel Disc Golf Course adds a clearly defined activity to this offering: the course has 9 holes and a total playing distance of 477 m. It opened in 2022. The necessary equipment can be borrowed, among other places, at the municipal office; playing with your own equipment is also possible.

This means that Orel offers various ways to spend a visit: you can focus on the Gothic church and its stone epitaphs, examine the traces of the former fortress and the fortification ramparts of Tři Bubny, or combine the 37.5 km cycling route with a sporting round.
