Velké Kunětice: Church, Castle and Lime Kilns

Velké Kunětice combines distinctive buildings, a multifaceted history and landscapes between the plain and the mountains. Church and Castle as Historical Landmarks

The parish Church of Our Lady of the Snows is a landmark of Velké Kunětice. It was formerly dedicated to Saint Elisabeth of Thuringia. The cemetery around the church is enclosed by a wall with two entrances: an eastern entrance towards the village and a northern entrance.

The village’s historical profile also includes the castle with its farmyard, which was designated a cultural monument in 2022. The castle complex consists of two residential buildings and farm buildings of different ages. The northern residential building dates back to a medieval foundation, while the western residential building is Neoclassical. The fortress, castle and remaining park are open to the public by prior arrangement or during events. Visitors should therefore take the applicable access option into account.

Between the Nisa Plain and the Rychlebské Mountains

The 981-hectare cadastral area of Velké Kunětice slopes gently down in its northern part, along the state border, towards the plain along the Nisa. The northern foothills of the Sokolský hřbet extend into the Rychlebské Mountains in the southern part. As a result, the village displays a landscape transition that differs clearly between the northern and southern areas.

Velké Kunětice was first mentioned in written records in 1284. In the late 15th century, there were limestone quarries here. After the hammer mills there ceased to operate, even more lime was burned in Velké Kunětice. This development makes the local industrial history another way of exploring the village’s past.

Cycling Routes through the Region

The marked cycling route 6041 leads from Javorník via Vidnava to Velké Kunětice. The regional cycling route of the Jeseník–Nysa area also runs via Sławniowice, Velké Kunětice, Rokliny, Kaltenštejn, Zelená Hora, Vápenná and Žulová. Lime Kilns and a Partially Flooded Mine

In the centre of the village, two unique 19th-century lime kilns stand directly beside a green-marked hiking trail. A path leads from the lime kilns to a partially flooded marble mine, from which the raw material for these kilns was extracted. This connection makes the lime kilns not merely a historical detail, but links the village centre, hiking trail and the history of raw-material extraction in a distinctive excursion theme.
