Discover Žulová: Nature, Stone and History

Žulová combines local history, the stonemasonry tradition and varied landscapes. Here, you can discover historical traces around Frýdberk, explore granite and mineralogy, or include nearby natural destinations such as the Nýznerov Waterfalls and Boží hora in your travel plans. The surrounding area also offers various hiking options – from a moderately difficult route to a circular route of more than 30 km that can be shortened to a partial section.

History and Stone in Žulová

Žulová Castle and Church combines the remains of a medieval castle with the nave of a church from the early 19th century. Frýdberk Castle in Žulová was finally destroyed by Swedish soldiers in 1639. The surviving keep of Frýdberk became part of the new Church of St. Joseph in the early 19th century.

The Žulová Stonemasonry Museum is located in Building No. 1 on Josefské náměstí, near the Church of St. In the town centre, it displays various local types of granite as well as marble samples. The mineralogical section focuses on systematic mineralogy. The local stone tradition also includes the Žulová School of Stonemasonry, which supplied the Marian Column.

Boží hora and the Nýznerov Waterfalls

Boží hora, near Žulová, is a pilgrimage site with several Neo-Gothic buildings, including the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows, reached by a Way of the Cross. The site became associated with the veneration of an image of Our Lady of Sorrows. Boží hora offers views of the main ridge of the Rychlebské Mountains and the surrounding landscape of Rychleby.

The Nýznerov Waterfalls, near Žulová, are located in the settlement of Nýznerov in the valley of the Stříbrný potok. They were declared a natural monument in 1965. The upper section is accessible via a staircase. The easiest access is via a forest path from Nýznerov, which is accessible only on foot.

Hiking, Water and Getting There

The route to Ripperův kámen is moderately difficult and can be walked from either Lázně Jeseník or Žulová. The basic circular route described near Žulová is more than 30 km long and can be shortened by walking only part of the loop. This provides different route lengths for planning without equating the two routes.

The Lom Ostrůvek quarry (Transgranit) offers another landscape experience. It is located in Žulová in the direction of Černá Voda and has a gently sloping access to the water as well as a small grass beach. Žulová can be reached by bus from Jeseník and Vidnava, as well as by a ČD train from Vidnava.
