Hiking trail with regional stories

The Latzelova Trail through the Rychlebské Mountains provides information about karst caves, the lives of local people and the processing of rock from the Jeseníky Mountains. It is a nine-kilometre route from Vápenná to Horní Lipová with eight stations. The eight stations structure the route and highlight different topics along the way. This means that a hike can be considered not only in terms of its length, but also by the themes of karst, local life and rock processing. Those who want to combine hiking with regional topics will find a clearly defined route here rather than a mere string of destinations.

Caves and protected nature

Jeskyně Na Pomezí is the largest cave system in crystalline limestone in the Czech Republic. As the NPP Jeskyně Na Pomezí national nature monument, the area is protected across 20.60 hectares. The caves are home to numerous winter colonies of bats; eleven species have been recorded there in total. The eleven recorded bat species complement the geological feature with a specific wildlife aspect. This places an independent nature theme alongside hiking at the centre of attention.

The Site of Community Importance Rychlebské hory – Sokolský hřbet includes the cadastral area of Vápenná. The protection status and its inclusion in the larger area therefore direct attention both to individual caves and to the wider landscape context. This protected-area perspective complements the individual excursion destinations with a broader landscape framework.

Quarry with views across the landscape

The landscape also includes the Lom Žulový vrch (Brankopy) quarry. The flooded granite quarry forms a pond near the summit of Žulový vrch. From Vápenná, it can be reached via a blue-marked hiking trail of approximately 4.5 kilometres. The approximate distance helps you classify this excursion as a separate hiking section within the day. From the quarry, there is a view northwards across the Žulovská pahorkatina uplands and towards the church on Boží hora. You can therefore consider a separate hiking route as another focus when planning your trip.

Transport links and historical traces

The history of the town also remains visible: the shaft lime kiln in Vápenná, dating from the mid-19th century, is the last surviving testimony to the area’s strong limestone production tradition. Transport links are another factor when choosing a location. Vápenná lies on the road and railway connection from Dolní Lipová via Žulová onwards to Javorník. This allows you to weigh nature, regional history and the location on this connection together when searching for suitable accommodation.
