Stará Červená Voda: Rocks, Forest and Culture

Stará Červená Voda combines protected landscapes, distinctive rocks, historic buildings and cycling opportunities within a compact thematic area. Here you will not find a uniform list of attractions, but rather different reasons for planning your trip: cultural monuments with medieval traces, technical evidence of kaolin mining, forest nature and routes for bicycles and mountain bikes.

Cultural monuments with a history of their own

The Roman Catholic parish church of Božího těla is a cultural monument; its Gothic core dates from the 13th century. In 1753, the church received its Baroque nave, along with Baroque and Neoclassical furnishings. Fragments of original 13th-century frescoes have been preserved in the presbytery. In front of the church stands a Baroque Trinity Column from the first half of the 18th century, which is protected as a monument together with the church.

A monument to the victims of the First World War by the cemetery wall commemorates the past. The work by Josef Obeth was erected in 1929 and reconstructed in 2005. The municipality's Old and New Kaolin Quarries also contain a technical monument: a railway tunnel. The Kaolin Railway Tunnel is one of two such tunnels in the Jeseník District and has a very well-preserved portal with pilasters dating from 1921.

Rocks, forest and protected nature

The Rychlebské hory-Sokolský hřbet European protected area extends into the territory of Stará Červená Voda. One of the area's striking natural destinations is Sedm skal, the largest rock formation in Stará Červená Voda. Granite blocks transported there by glaciers form a rock wall approximately eight metres high. The Stará Červená Voda forest complex is home to a regionally significant population of the yellow-bellied toad (Bombina variegata). In Nová Červená Voda, the protected large-leaved lime tree is considered the largest known tree of its kind in the region.

Smaller cultural and historical destinations also complement the landscape. The Chapel of Panny Marie Bolestné on the edge of the municipality near Vidnava was built in 1904. It is designed as a double chapel: on one side it serves as a mortuary chapel, and on the other as the Latzel family's crypt. Pramen Pokroku was built in 1848 under the name Vorwärts Quelle and is now known as a well-preserved historic spring in the cadastral area of Stará Červená Voda. The spring has retained its round shape and a square marble plaque bearing its name; access to it has been partially restored.

Cycling and orientation in the area

Cycling route 6046 passes through Stará Červená Voda, is 28 kilometres long and is classified as moderately difficult. Several single-track trails of the Rychlebské Trails run through the municipality's cadastral area, particularly through Nová Červená Voda. There are also trail routes for mountain bikers in the vicinity of Stará Červená Voda. From the upper edge of Nová Červená Voda, you can reach Sedm skal via the connection to the cycling route towards Černá Voda.

When choosing your destination, you can therefore focus on different priorities: historic buildings and monuments, protected nature or cycling routes. For further orientation, the nearby places include Česká Ves, Bernartice U Javorníka, Vlčice, Ostružná, Javornik, Horni Lipova, Černá Voda and Bobrovník.
