Dolní Vítkovice also makes visible the transformation of an area once shaped by coal mining and iron production: Today, it serves as an educational, social and cultural centre. Guided tours focus on the history of coal mining or the operation of blast furnaces. The Bolt Tower is a 20-metre-high extension of Blast Furnace No. 1; the observation platform at a height of 80 metres offers views of Vítkovice.

The Science and Technology Centre in Dolní Vítkovice complements this focus with interactive exhibitions for children and adults. Ostrava Planetarium offers a regular programme for visitors of all ages, focusing on astronomy as well as natural sciences and technology.

Nature Trails and Unique Geological History

You can find natural-history contrasts in the Botanical Park at Ostrava Zoo. Three botanical educational trails run through it, with a total length of 6 kilometres. In the Landek National Nature Monument, coal-bearing strata of the Carboniferous type, formed 250 million years ago, are exposed; they can be seen at numerous coal seam outcrops. A nature and mining-history educational trail also leads through the natural monument.

Castle, City History and Views

The city’s history includes Slezskoostravský Castle, a stone fortress from the 13th century. Its interiors house exhibitions on the history of the castle, the city and the entire region. The observation tower of the New Town Hall offers a different view of Ostrava: A lift ride takes you to a height of 73 metres, with views of Silesian Ostrava, Moravian Ostrava and the districts of Přívoz, Mariánské Hory, Vítkovice and Poruba.
