Ostrava-City District: Industrial Heritage, Nature and Museums

The Ostrava-City District combines impressive evidence of industrial history with river landscapes, nature reserves and a diverse cultural scene. Here, you can view preserved hoisting equipment from the early days of electrification, explore interactive technology worlds, follow Ostrava’s history from the Middle Ages to 1989, or discover distinctive landscapes between the Odra and Ostravice rivers. This makes it easy to choose accommodation according to the focus of your trip: urban history and museums are available alongside nature experiences, cycling routes and regional cuisine.

Industrial heritage with original preserved features

Důl Michal offers a particularly tangible insight into the industrial past. This authentic industrial site preserves electric hoisting machines and compressors from the early phase of electrification. At Dolní Vítkovice, the history of coal mining and blast-furnace operations is presented during guided tours. The former industrial complex is now used as an educational, social and cultural centre. Gong is also part of this transformation: the event building is located in a former gas holder that once stored purified blast-furnace gas. Today, it hosts international conferences and congresses, concerts and art exhibitions.

The Moravská Ostrava urban conservation area showcases architecture and urban planning from around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The Ostrava Museum provides a broader historical perspective. Its subjects range from art history, archaeology, palaeontology, geology and mineralogy to ethnography and the region’s nature and landscape. The museum traces the history of the city from its foundation in 1267 to 1989. In the mining exhibition, you can see, among other things, a collection of miners’ lamps and measuring instruments, as well as an interactive map from 1928 showing the city’s mine shafts.

Technology museums for different interests

Velký svět techniky offers four permanent interactive exhibitions: Dětský svět, Svět vědy a objevů, Svět civilizace and Svět přírody. You should allow approximately four to five hours for a visit. The building is fully accessible. Malý svět techniky U6 offers a different experience in terms of both time and content: the exhibition takes visitors interactively from the steam engine to modern engines. Original large blowers and around one hundred playful exhibits are part of the exhibition. The building is partially accessible. The two buildings therefore differ clearly in scope, subject matter and structural accessibility.

Landek: rivers, mining and early human history

Landek lies near the confluence of the Odra and Ostravice rivers and combines natural and industrial history within a compact thematic area. The site includes a national nature monument with diverse vegetation and wildlife, as well as a technical monument belonging to the Mining Museum. An educational trail focusing on science and mining passes exposed coal seams from the Carboniferous period. Landek is also associated with mammoth hunters who lived there around 25,000 years ago, as well as with the Petřkovice Venus.

There are also several ways to travel to Landek. DPO buses reach the Hornické muzeum stop on routes 34, 52, 56, 67 and 68. A cycle route follows the Ostravice and Odra rivers along Cycle Route G to Landek. An unusual landscape feature is Halda Ema: its thermally active interior reaches temperatures of up to 1500°C and forms porcelainite and jasper minerals.

River floodplains and protected landscapes

Polanská niva adds a natural dimension to the industrially shaped sites. The national nature reserve contains 50 hectares of woodland and forms part of the Oderská niva biocentre, as well as the European protected area and bird protection area of Poodří. Special guided excursions with a nature ranger offer unique insights. Poodří is characterised by the meandering branches of the Odra, pools that carry water either year-round or periodically, floodplain forests, internationally important wetlands, ponds and extensive floodplain meadows. Around one tenth of the protected Poodří landscape lies within the city limits of Ostrava; the protected area also extends into the districts of Nový Jičín and Frýdek-Místek.

The Rezavka nature reserve is characterised by wetlands and floodplain vegetation. At the Ostrava Museum, the landscape can also be explored through the Living Nature exhibition, which covers floodplain forests in the Odra basin, regional forests, rivers, ponds, meadows and the region’s urban landscape.

Urban routes, transport and regional cuisine

For orientation in Ostrava, public transport is integrated into the ODIS system. The ODIS system includes trams, buses and trolleybuses. The walk through Poruba is marked with local blue-and-white tourist signs and can be reached by tram lines 7, 8 and 17 to the Hlavní třída stop. Ostravské kulturní stezky creates maps in cooperation with experts in history, architecture, culture and nature.

Gastronomy is also part of discovering the region. Visitor information mentions Czech, regional and international cuisine, as well as typical pub specialities such as utopenci and pickled Hermelín. A 3.3-kilometre route is dedicated to small breweries in Ostrava and the surrounding region. The “Ostravské hospody” route, by contrast, leads to 19th-century pubs and explores the history of brewing in Ostrava.
