Zbyslavice: Hiking Trails, Wetland and History

Zbyslavice lies in an inhabited valley between the Sezina and Polančice streams in the Oder river basin. Forests and meadows shape the landscape, with hiking and cycling trails crossing between them. For a trip combining different interests, the village thus brings together nature experiences, short explorations and traces of its history, without any single excursion destination defining the character of the surroundings.

Easy Trails and a Landscape to Explore

A good starting point is the Dolní louky Nature Trail. The educational trail is slightly more than one kilometre long and follows an easy route suitable for all age groups. Twelve information panels introduce the local plants and animals, including legally protected species. This makes the short route not just a walk, but also an engaging encounter with the distinctive features of the landscape.

The pond area at Dolní louky includes a wetland retention basin, a water reservoir and two wetland pools. These different bodies of water give the area a clear natural character and complement the information provided by the nature trail. Another way to explore Zbyslavice on foot is the Zbyslavice Nature Trail. It consists of three routes established since 2016, created in cooperation with the Zbyslavice primary and kindergarten school.

Cycling Route, Bus Connection and Local Orientation

Cyclists can also include Zbyslavice in a longer route. Cycling Route 6191 leads from Bravantice via Olbramice and Zbyslavice to the Setina Valley. Along the way, it passes a windmill and runs through wooded areas. The route thus connects several local landmarks and landscape features, while the hiking trails in Zbyslavice focus more closely on the immediate surroundings and their natural details.

For getting between the villages, bus route 679 is available. It connects Zbyslavice with Klimkovice, Vřesina and Ostrava. Local amenities also include the Zbyslavice Library, with Wi-Fi, computers, new books for children and adults, and a system for interlibrary loans between libraries across the region. Those staying longer can therefore also gain an insight into local everyday life beyond the excursion routes.

Historical Traces around Zbyslavice

The former Zbyslavice fortress stood about 300 metres south of the village centre, on a rise above the Sezina valley. No visible masonry remains of the former complex have survived; however, the uneven terrain indicates earlier historic structures. A section of the former moat also remains in the northern part of the site. This is therefore not a fully preserved structure, but rather an area where history can be understood through its location, landforms and individual traces.

Another historical landmark is the Chapel of Saint Matthew, which has been extensively reconstructed. The small square by the chapel still served as a small village centre after the war. The cultural landscape on the boundary between the municipalities of Zbyslavice and Olbramice also includes the Větrný mlýn na Vrchpolí windmill. It is a Dutch-type windmill and is privately owned. When planning a trip, it is therefore important to distinguish between visible landscape, historical traces and private property.

The Annual Cycle and Further Research Destinations

A firm tradition in the village calendar is Den obce, which always takes place in Zbyslavice in mid-September. Together with the nature trails, chapel, wetlands and historical terrain traces, it creates a varied picture of the village: nature, local history and everyday life stand closely alongside one another here, without needing to be combined into a single attraction.
