Radschitz: Mountain Views, Quarries and a Hiking Route

Radschitz combines historical traces, impressive landscape views and an unusual quarry landscape. The first written reference to Radčice dates back to 1543. This marks the beginning of the village’s history at a place where you can discover nature, regional architectural styles and geological features within a compact thematic area. Views, hiking, former extraction sites and local traditions offer different focal points for your days here.

Views from Draha across Several Mountain Regions

From Draha, also known locally as Bučka, you can see the Krkonoše Mountains and part of the Jizera Mountains. You can also see Kozákov and Suché skály from there. The various viewing destinations make Draha a prominent vantage point. From here, you can combine views of the village with the surrounding landscape regions and gain a broad impression of Radčice’s geographical location.

A Hiking Route through Radschitz

The important Černostudniční hřeben tourist hiking route runs through Radčice. Its route leads from Berany at the foot of the Jizera Mountains through Radčice in the direction of Kozákov, the highest peak of the Bohemian Paradise. In this way, the route connects the foot of the Jizera Mountains with Radčice and the direction of Kozákov. For a hike across several landscape regions, this path provides a specific connection both to the Jizera Mountains and to the Bohemian Paradise.

Quarries, Roofing Slate and Fossils

The Radčice–Jirkov–Jílové geological locality comprises a group of abandoned, overgrown and partly flooded quarries for roofing slate. The age of the slate-bearing rocks is estimated at 470 to 480 million years. Small ponds remained after the former quarries and often serve as natural swimming spots in summer. The interplay of extraction areas, vegetation and water shapes the character of this locality.

Roofing slate extracted in the quarries of Radčice was used, among other things, for roofing historic buildings throughout Bohemia. The oldest log cabins in Radčice also have a distinctive local characteristic: they were arranged in a horseshoe shape. Within the geological locality, the Tlukačka quarry is one of the sites where trace fossils, mollusc fossils and trilobites have been found. Anyone interested in local history can examine material, construction methods and fossil finds here in a local context.

Excursions and Regional Orientation

Radčice is a starting point for many excursions in both summer and winter. For travel and local planning, the IDOL bus route 851 serves the Radčice stop on the connection between Jablonec nad Nisou and Železný Brod. The regional transport connection thus complements the village’s landscape and geological themes.

An additional insight into the local festival culture was provided by the Rádecká pouť on 2 and 3 August 2025: traditional halušky and fair cakes were served there. This festival brought together local customs and regional cuisine.
