Falkenau an der Eger Between History and Water

Falkenau an der Eger combines impressive architectural history with a river landscape, parks, a natural bathing area and opportunities to explore by bicycle. Sokolov Castle and Regional History

Sokolov Castle is the focal point of the historical attractions. Around 1730, the castle grounds were designed in the style of a French garden with abundant sculptural decoration. The castle itself is a four-winged, two-storey building with four towers and a fountain in its enclosed courtyard. Since 1960, it has housed a museum with regional exhibitions on minerals, porcelain, flora and fauna, the Nostitz family and modern mining history. The range therefore extends from natural history and regional materials to the development of mining.

Churches and Protected Cultural Monuments

The sacred buildings also give Falkenau an der Eger a clearly recognisable cultural and historical profile. The protected complex of the Church of Saint James the Greater includes the church, stairways, an enclosure, the statues of Saint John of Nepomuk and Saint James, as well as the associated plots of land. The church is a single-nave, rectangular building with a west tower, presbytery, sacristy, chapel and oratory. The Capuchin monastery complex of Saint Anthony of Padua in Sokolov is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic and includes the Church of Saint Anthony of Padua. Following its reconstruction, this church serves as a concert and exhibition hall.

Park, Bathing Area and Observation Tower

The city's rivers and parks provide orientation in the landscape. Sokolov lies at the confluence of the Ohře and Svatava rivers; the Lobezský Stream also flows through Sokolov. Husovy sady is an important landscape feature in the centre of Sokolov. It preserves part of the former castle garden and the former pheasantry, with ponds and other bodies of water. Lake Michal is a natural bathing area created on the site of a former open-cast lignite mine. The Hard Observation Tower offers another view of the surrounding area: it is a replica of the original observation tower from 1907, built in 2000–2001. The observation tower reopened in 2001 and was made accessible to the public; its summit is reached via 55 steps, from where there is a view over Sokolov and the Ore Mountains.

A City with Different Directions for Exploration

If you would like to combine culture, parks and water in your plans, the Městský okruh cycle path runs through Husovy sady and can be extended to the natural bathing area at Michal. This allows the documented sites to be organised according to different interests: the castle and museum represent history, the sacred buildings represent protected cultural heritage, and Husovy sady and Michal represent landscape and water.
