Sediviny between village history and the Eagle Mountains

Šediviny combines a distinctive village character with unusual discoveries. The village displays the type of settlement typical of the Eagle Mountains, with scattered development; the chaluppy, too, remain scattered along the slopes. The earliest surviving references to Šediviny date from the 16th century. The scattered settlement pattern shapes the impression of the village more strongly than a compact center.

The Church of St. Joseph is particularly distinctive. It was built in 1907 as a direct extension of an earlier chapel and is an Art Nouveau building whose exterior combines fired facing bricks with local gabbro. The 1907 building therefore represents a younger historical layer alongside the earliest surviving references to Šediviny from the 16th century. At the same time, it is a defining element of the Šediviny landscape. Some former farmsteads can still be identified by groups of old lime trees and remnants of walls. In meadows near former houses, the anise-scented plant sweet cicely, originally from the Alps, continues to grow.

Along the way through Šediviny

For orientation on foot, red, yellow and blue hiking trail markings meet in Šediviny. The Šedivinská osmička is an approximately 12-kilometer walking loop through the village. Špičák lies along this route at approximately the 8.4-kilometer mark. This length provides a clear framework for planning the timing, while the section at the mountain marks a later point in the route without presupposing a specific walking time or level of difficulty.

Špičák lies in the wider regional surroundings of Šediviny, is 833 meters high and defines the northwestern foothills of the Eagle Mountains. For cyclists, the Church of St. Joseph is located on cycling route 4243. The mountain expands the connection with the village by adding a landscape point in the surrounding region, while the church on cycling route 4243 provides a specific point of reference for cyclists.

Český Hobitín and the Šedivinská 11°

A special attraction is Český Hobitín in the mountain settlement of Šediviny: a small Hobbit village inspired by Tolkien’s world, designed and built by hand by Svatoslav Hofman on a family property. For your specific planning, it is important to note that unpaved paths there make access with a stroller or wheelchair more difficult. The combination of Tolkien’s world, original design and craftsmanship gives the small village an unusual character. The place thus combines an imaginative idea with a personal building project.

The Šedivinská 11° event is documented for the years 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022. In this roller-ski competition, the course ran along a 1,200-meter-long local road with an elevation difference of 130 meters and ended at the Church of St. With the Church of St. Joseph as its finish, the competition also has a clear connection to the village.
