Sojovice: Bridge, Jizera and Černý Orel Nature Reserve

Sojovice combines an illustrative local history with a river landscape and nature. The Sojovice Bridge, the bell tower, the war memorial and Černý Orel Nature Reserve each give the village its own distinctive character. In addition, there is the Jizera, a designated cycle route and a body of water with specified fishing days. The Sojovice Bridge and Its History

The Sojovice Bridge was opened on 5 December 1909 and was at that time one of the largest reinforced-concrete bridges in the Kingdom of Bohemia. Its dimensions are also clearly documented: the bridge is 64 metres long, and including the wings its total length is 78 metres. Another historical detail is located within its structure. A commemorative document bearing the signatures of the participants in the opening ceremony, including Archduke Charles, was built into the structure in a metal capsule.

Bell Tower and War Memorial

The bell in the Sojovice bell tower is also part of the village’s historical character. It dates from 1533 and is still in use. The Sojovice war memorial stands in the centre of the park on the village square. It was unveiled on 28 September 1924. The names of nine local residents who fell in the First World War are engraved on the memorial. In just a few places, it is therefore possible to trace different periods of local history, from the early bell to the 20th-century culture of remembrance.

The Jizera and Černý Orel Nature Reserve

The Jizera flows through the cadastral area of Sojovice. Černý Orel Nature Reserve also extends into this cadastral area. It protects the Jizera’s floodplain habitats, including deciduous forests, floodplain meadows and grassland. The reserve is also home to a population of the scarce large blue butterfly.

Another landscape feature is the former riverbed, which was created during the construction of the bridge. It is still visible and is known as Stará Jizera. When planning your trip, you can therefore take both the river’s history and the protected floodplain habitats in Sojovice into account.

Cycle Route and Body of Water

Sojovice lies on cycle route 0041 Káraný–Kochánky, which passes through the village. In addition, a 2-hectare body of water in Sojovice is part of fishing area 411 174 JIZERA 1 A. Fishing at the Sojovice body of water is permitted on Wednesdays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. The fishing days are therefore an important distinction from general landscape and local sightseeing and should be taken into account when making your own plans.
