Benátky nad Jizerou – Castle, Nature and Family Experiences

Benátky nad Jizerou combines castle history, astronomy and protected landscapes with discoveries that can be experienced in different ways. Around the castle, cultural heritage and short experience-based activities await, while the natural monuments along the Jizera offer a different perspective on the surroundings. This allows you to shape your stay around historical themes, family-oriented activities and quieter landscape experiences.

Castle, Churches and Astronomy

The castle of Benátky nad Jizerou was built at the beginning of the 16th century on the ruins of a monastery of the Cyriacs. A place particularly closely associated with the castle is the castle church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. It was consecrated on February 25, 1349, and originally had an Early Gothic appearance. A gallery connects the church with the castle; its tower serves as a lookout tower.

The Muzeum Benátecka is located in the castle. Among its special offerings is an interactive exhibition about Tycho Brahe and prehistoric and medieval astronomy. This gives a visit to the castle a perspective on the history of science in addition to its architectural history. The figurative sgraffiti on the eastern side of the castle were also added in 1599.

The castle is also associated with music history. The stay of the young musician Bedřich Smetana in Benátky nad Jizerou from 1844 to 1847 is commemorated by a plaque at the castle entrance, a memorial room opened in the museum in 1957, and a monument unveiled in 1974 in the upper part of the castle park. Another historical sight is the Church of St. Mary Magdalene. It was built between 1561 and 1570 in the Late Gothic style and restored in the Baroque style in 1664, particularly in terms of its façade and interiors. Part of the castle cellars is used for cultural and social events.

Natural Monuments along the Jizera

The Stará Jizera natural monument comprises abandoned meanders in a meander loop of the Jizera between the Dražice district of Benátky nad Jizerou and the municipality of Horky nad Jizerou. It protects a relatively well-preserved complex of wetlands and meadows with scattered large oak trees. It is considered one of the last examples of a floodplain ecosystem along the Jizera.

Another protected area is the Slepeč natural monument, parts of which lie in the cadastral territories of Benátky nad Jizerou and Kochánky. It covers a total of 7.75 hectares and protects, in particular, the occurrence of the lady's slipper orchid, which is critically endangered in the Jizera region. The two natural monuments thus represent different aspects of the landscape: Stará Jizera stands for abandoned meanders, wetlands and floodplain meadows, while Slepeč represents a specifically protected plant population.

The castle vineyards are another landscape feature. They lie on sunny southeastern slopes above the Jizera on rocky ground that provided favorable conditions for successful winegrowing. The Žitava branch of the Way of St. James enters the cadastral territory of Benátky nad Jizerou at Lake Měsíc; the lake belongs to the Stará Jizera natural monument.

Short Routes and Playful Discoveries

The “Benátecká stopa” is a 1.5-kilometer educational trail around the castle grounds. It is intended for parents with children aged 6 to 15 and is suitable for every season. The mobile adventure app “Setkání hvězdných astronomů,” with 13 stations and tasks, offers another way to explore the area. The game takes approximately 45 minutes, and the route is about 1.2 kilometers long.
