Košice U Nepoměřic reveals itself through a range of local features: the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary tells a story of a long construction history, while a single pond on the village green recalls the area’s former pond landscape. There are also dated examples of ceramics and local food culture. If you are looking for accommodation, these themes can help you decide whether a stay focused on church architecture, local history and cultural discoveries suits your travel interests.

Church and architectural history

Košice was a parish village by the mid-13th century at the latest, as evidenced by its originally Romanesque church. The first written mention of Košice dates from 1287. Parts of the original early Gothic structure have also been preserved at the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary: a rectangular nave and a rectangular chancel with a rib vault. The building thus combines early local history with clearly identifiable architectural details. The rib vault describes the shape of the ceiling; the nave and chancel are distinct parts of the church building.

Later building phases can also be dated precisely. A date on the late Gothic pointed-arch portal places the construction of the tower in 1563. The bell chamber contains two historic bells, dating from 1475 and 1492. The last major renovation took place in the 1820s: a sacristy was added, and the entire church building was given new roofing. The portal, bells and renovation history thus trace several clearly distinguishable periods. As part of a restoration project, the access stairs were adapted to make the bell chamber accessible. During the “Dnů evropského dědictví 2012”, a guided tour of the church with expert commentary took place in Košice.

The church stands in the centre of the village, on the road to Malešov, on a gentle slope above a watercourse. This location offers a clear point of reference for anyone wishing to explore the church building and its surroundings.

Village pond and local life

Of the many ponds that once stood in Košice, only the pond in the village centre, on the village green, remains today. The contrast between the former abundance and the single remaining pond provides a concise, vivid picture of the area’s landscape history. The village green is also a second local landmark alongside the church: a feature of the former pond landscape remains part of the village’s present-day appearance.

Ceramics and koláč: dated cultural references

Culture and food are also represented by specific examples. In January 2024, regular ceramics-making sessions were held at KC Košice; one on 9 January focused on fauna and flora. At the fifth charity market, “KOLÁČ PRO KOSTEL V KOŠICÍCH”, on 8 September 2018, bakers competed for the best traditional koláč. Nature as the subject of a ceramics event and the baking competition at the charity market offer insights into different forms of local cultural life. Unlike the enduring architectural and landscape features, these examples are tied to specific years.

What kind of stay suits Košice?

Košice is especially worth considering as a destination if you are interested in the history of a church building, its architectural details and the development of the village. The village pond adds a landscape feature to this focus, while the dated cultural references offer another perspective. When choosing accommodation, it therefore helps to first consider whether architecture and local history should shape your stay, or whether a current programme is important to your trip. If your decision depends on events, check the dates separately for your chosen travel period.
