Discover Liběchov: Castle Garden, Klácelka and the Cycling Route

Liběchov combines art, architectural history and a distinctive cycling route. Liběchov Castle and Its Garden

The castle grounds include a symmetrically designed garden decorated with sculptures and an English park with three bridges and an artistically designed watercourse of the Liběchovka. The accessible Castle Garden features garden vases and a waterfall by Václav Levý. There is also a statue of Perseus by Matyáš Braun. The symmetrical garden and the English park each offer different design accents. F. M. Kaňka built a new structure at the castle between 1720 and 1730. The original round water castle from the 14th century is largely preserved.

Klácelka and Václav Levý’s Reliefs

Klácelka is both a cave and a sandstone block with reliefs created by Václav Levý in the 1840s. The entrance is designed as a rectangular portal framed with ornamental decoration and topped by a drapery arch. Inside the cave are shallow rock reliefs based on motifs from J. W. Goethe’s fable “Lišák Ferina,” following designs by the French caricaturist Grandville. The area in front of the cave is called Blaník. There, Levý created reliefs of Jan Žižka, Prokop Holý, Zdeněk Zásmucký and dwarfs forging weapons for the Blaník knights. The portal, fable motifs and Blaník form a sequence of different sandstone motifs. The cave is located directly on a marked blue hiking trail.

Churches with Different Architectural Forms

The Church of St. Gall is a single-nave Baroque building from 1733–1734, created by remodeling an older Gothic church. It is accessible during Mass. The Chapel of the Holy Spirit and the Holy Sepulchre, by contrast, is a simple octagonal building with a dome and lantern; in 1903, a rectangular nave was added to its west side.

The route’s integration into several cycling routes places it within a broader cycling travel context, while Harfenice adds further figures and a cave to the sandstone theme. Another example of sandstone art, Harfenice is a massive sandstone block with sculptures from 1841: these include a female figure with a harp, seven large human heads and the artificially carved U ještěra cave.
