Drahobudice: Archaeology, Church and Cycling Route

Drahobudice is a place for anyone who seeks history beyond the major cities while travelling through the Czech Republic. Archaeological traces, a late Baroque church, an ossuary with a preserved fresco and a described cycling loop route form a manageable sequence of discoveries. In addition, a protected lime tree, with its dimensions and distinctive appearance, serves as a landmark in its own right.

Archaeological traces right in the village

The Drahobudice archaeological site is located right in the village on a hill near the Church of the Most Holy Trinity, in the Na Valech area. It is classified as a significant archaeological site in category ÚAN I. The site includes a ditch and indistinct remains of ramparts. Precisely because these features have been preserved only modestly, they do not require a long trip to a remote destination: they give the village landscape a historical dimension that reveals itself to attentive visitors on a walk.

The Most Holy Trinity and the ossuary

The Church of the Most Holy Trinity was built in 1753–1754 in the late Baroque style by I. J. Palliardi. Its location also points to an older history: the present church was built where a church of Gothic origin had previously stood. Several Renaissance tombstones from the former church are set into the old cemetery wall. Different historical layers thus meet in one place and can be connected during a cultural visit.

Behind the presbytery on the eastern side of the church stands the Drahobudice ossuary. A fresco dating from 1765 has been preserved there. It depicts Christ on the cross, as well as the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist. The precise location behind the presbytery helps you place this smaller structure in relation to the church without overlooking its independent art-historical significance.

The Vavřinecká dvacítka with a section through Drahobudice

The village also offers a clearly described point of interest for a cycling tour. The 22-kilometre Vavřinecká dvacítka cycling loop begins and ends in Zásmuky and passes through Drahobudice at kilometre 15. Along its route, it uses footpaths, forest tracks and paved roads. In the section through Drahobudice, the route leads to a detour to the local church. It then continues between fields along a flat section to Bečváry. The different sections make it easier to plan a tour combining cultural and landscape experiences.

A protected lime tree as a village landmark

The protected lime tree Lípa v Drahobudicích is safeguarded because of its exceptional growth, aesthetic value and function as a distinctive landmark. A measurement from 2009 records a height of 17 metres and a trunk circumference of 284 centimetres. The crown is 14 metres high and 13 metres wide. These specific dimensions make the lime tree a particularly vivid natural feature within the village and complement the archaeological and ecclesiastical sights with a living point of reference.
