Tismice between the Basilica, Hillfort and Stream Valley

Tismice combines a Romanesque basilica, an early medieval hillfort and a landscape in the valley of the Bušinec stream. This creates a cultural and scenic focus for your stay: you can combine sacred architectural history, archaeological traces and paths around the village. The basilica in Tismice is a Romanesque three-nave basilica dating from the 12th century. Tismice Hillfort is considered one of the oldest early medieval hillforts in the wider region and played a central role in the 8th and 9th centuries.

Romanesque Basilica and Sacred History

The west façade of the basilica in Tismice has two towers. The oldest surviving bell in the Kolín region hangs in the north tower; it was cast in 1442. The south wall contains a Gothic side portal from the mid-15th century. The basilica grounds also include a mortuary chapel and numerous historic gravestones. This gives the visit several specific points of interest: in addition to the three-nave structure itself, you can view individual architectural features, the bell and the historic design of the grounds.

Tismice Hillfort and Paths in the Surrounding Area

The largest concentration of Avar-type finds in Bohemia is located at Tismice Hillfort. From the village centre, the hillfort can be reached via a green-marked hiking trail in about five minutes. Tismice Hillfort offers a view of the basilica in Tismice. Archaeological finds from the local Slavic hillfort are also held in the Tismice municipal library. This allows you to combine a short walk, a scenic view and an additional historical insight.

The footpath from the elevated plateau near Nová Ves into the valley of the Tismice stream takes about fifteen minutes. For cyclists, the project “REGIONEM S VĚTREM V ZÁDECH”, implemented by the municipality of Tismice, connects new cycle paths with existing routes. The new cycle paths run wherever possible along quiet agricultural and public roads in the area around Český Brod and Úvaly.
