Bezno – Baroque Ensemble and Historic Church

Bezno combines an exceptionally rich cultural history with a clearly recognizable Baroque townscape. At its center are the Church of St Peter and St Paul, Bezno Château and a sculptural ensemble. Church of St Peter and St Paul

The Church of St Peter and St Paul was built by E. Kondel between 1768 and 1769. It replaced a medieval church building that had already been mentioned in 1369. Its location is particularly distinctive for orientation in the town: the church stands on higher ground opposite the château grounds. The Kalvárie sculptural group is also located by the church in Bezno.

The church also offers a specific scheduled event for visitors interested in religion and cultural history. Public masses are celebrated at St Peter and St Paul on the second Saturday of every month at 2:00 p.m. This means that a stay in Bezno can be explored not only through historic buildings, but also through a regularly recurring religious occasion.

Bezno Château and the Baroque Townscape

Bezno Château was built in 1750 on the site of a medieval fortress as a Late Baroque château. For your planning, it is important to note that the château is not open to the public. Nevertheless, its architectural layout remains a defining feature of the town: the château consists of a two-storey main building with a central risalit topped by a gable and featuring a balcony, as well as two-storey, curved side wings enclosing a courtyard of honor.

The Baroque settlement ensemble of Bezno comprises a newly built château, a rectory and a remodeled church. Baroque statues were installed around the significant buildings and at other locations. The sculptural ensemble comprises allegorical figures of the four seasons, two statues of Venus Anadyomene and two vases. These details give Bezno’s cultural profile a distinctly art-historical dimension that extends beyond the château building itself.

History Dating Back to the Late Neolithic

Bezno is shaped by more than its Baroque architecture. Finds from the Late Neolithic period attest to settlement in Bezno between 4500 and 4000 BC. This creates a broad historical span for a trip focused on history: the traces extend from very early settlement through the medieval church building to the Baroque design of the town in the 18th century.
