Červené Janovice between Castle History and Katlov

Historical Traces between the Water Castle and the Chateau

Červené Janovice combines prominent historical landmarks with a waterside destination. A masonry bridge, ramparts, and other remains at Červené Janovice Chateau mark the site of a former water castle dating from the 14th century. The castle courtyard features surviving Renaissance arcades, now glazed. Medieval defensive remains and the representative architecture of later centuries thus meet in one place – a worthwhile focus for anyone who wants to discover not only the landscape but also historical details during their travels.

The development of the chateau reaches further back into history. According to various sources, the former fortress was converted into a magnificent chateau in 1600 by Karel Bretani, a stucco artist from the Vlach region.

Church Art and a Restored Landmark

The churches, too, tell the story of a long architectural history. During repairs to St. Martin’s Church in 1875, original Gothic stone window surrounds were discovered. The window behind the altar also had its original Gothic form. The new church was consecrated on October 15, 1911, by Bishop Th.Dr. Josef Doubrava. Those interested in sacred architecture will find specific evidence here from different periods rather than merely a general account of the locality’s history.

A smaller but particularly vivid detail is the statue of the young fisherman at Na Městečku. It has stood there for more than 100 years and was carved from Hořice sandstone in 1911. In 2025, the statue was professionally restored and returned to its pedestal. Its origin, age, and restoration give the motif a traceable story that fits well as a standalone discovery when researching the area.

Katlov, Pohan, and Different Excursion Ideas

Katlov adds another landscape theme. Katlov is a pond with a large recreational area. At Katlov, visitors can fish with Jakub Vágner. This creates a clear contrast for your planning with the historical themes of the chateau and churches: alongside architecture and local history, there is a waterside stay with a documented fishing opportunity.

Benches were installed at the Pohan rest area in spring 2025. An avenue of eight oaks was planted there in the same spring. The two measures describe a place where new elements have visibly been added and provide another specific point of reference for your exploration.

Historical Transport Link and Regional Research

The state road from Čáslav to Zruč nad Sázavou runs through Červené Janovice; it opened in 1829. This historic connection complements the sights with a look at the development of the locality and its transport routes.

A local tradition is also documented with a specific date: on Saturday, May 11, 2024, Sokol Červené Janovice organized the traditional Staročeské máje Maypole procession in Janovice. The event belongs to the more recent history of the locality and complements the older architectural and artistic monuments with an insight into community traditions.
