Svatý Mikuláš – Castle Park, Culture and Nature

When you choose Svatý Mikuláš as your destination, you will find a varied combination of culture, parkland and nature observation. The themes surrounding Kačina are particularly distinctive: guided tours reveal the history of the site, exhibitions showcase special collections, and the castle park offers its own way to experience the landscape. Culture and Special Tours at Kačina Castle

The “13 Chotkovských komnat” tour presents the history and lifestyle of the Chotek family. “Za oponu zámeckého divadla” offers a completely different view of the castle. This tour shows one of the oldest surviving high theatres in Europe. “Zámecký skleník, bylinková zahrada a konírna” also has its own focus: the guided walk leads through the orangery, herb and vegetable garden, park and stables.

Several exhibitions complement the cultural offering. “Království včel” includes a glazed, functioning beehive where you can observe the bees. The “Příběh dřeva” exhibition can be seen on the first floor of Kačina Castle. The Museum of Czech Rural Life is housed at Kačina Castle at Svatý Mikuláš 51. The “Království včel” exhibition combines nature observation with a cultural visit.

Parkland, Nature and Activity

Kačina Castle Park is open year-round; admission is free. The Kačina castle garden was designed in the style of an English natural landscape park. Kačina Park is also part of the Kačina Nature Monument. The site is also remarkable for its nature: many rare insect species live at Kačina; for some of them, Kačina is the only confirmed location in Bohemia. Kačina is designated as a site of Community importance within the Natura 2000 network.

If you would like to combine exercise with discovery, the orienteering course in the area of the fixed control points of NZM Kačina has ten control points. It can be completed by running, on foot or by bicycle. The choice of transport changes the pace and physical nature of the visit. The fixed control points also give the activity a clear spatial reference.

Time in the Park and Active Exploration

Those who do not want to spend their entire stay indoors can plan the castle park as a separate part of the day. This creates a clear transition between sightseeing and time outdoors. When members of a travel group have different interests, part of the visit can take place in the castle and another part in the park. For exercise in the park, the orienteering course adds ten fixed control points. The three means of transport offer different paces for exploring the same area: you can complete it by running, on foot or by bicycle.
