Pustevny – Trails, Winter Landscape and Culture

Pustevny combine nature experiences with a unique cultural heritage. Here, you can explore an educational trail with stations focusing on nature, the landscape and history, follow the marked path to the Radegast statue, use cross-country ski trails in winter or discover the historic buildings of the cultural complex. The area therefore also offers clearly distinct experiences for trips with different interests.

Educational Trail and Paths around Pustevny

The Radhošťská ovčí dálnice educational trail is approximately 4 km long and leads from the Pustevny saddle to the Chapel of Saints Cyril and Methodius on Radhošť. Nine stations focus on the nature, landscape and history of this beautiful and widely known part of the Beskids. The trail can be experienced differently depending on the season: in winter, it can be completed on skis, while in summer it can be explored by mountain bike.

Another important destination is the statue of Radegast. From Pustevny, it can be reached via a wide path that is also marked as a blue hiking trail and as the European long-distance trail E3. The statue stands halfway between Pustevny and Radhošť at an elevation of 1,120 metres. This allows you to combine a specific attraction, a marked path and a section of the landscape without having to limit yourself to just one type of excursion.

Cross-Country Skiing in Winter

A total of 74 km of cross-country ski tracks of varying difficulty are groomed in the Pustevny area. Among the most sought-after routes with magnificent views is the easy ridge route towards Radhošť or Martiňák. Pustevny is also the starting point for a popular cross-country skiing area. Several cross-country ski routes pass through Pustevny, so the area can also serve as a starting point for further excursions. This creates a clear distinction when planning your day between a single route and an area with several route options.

Cultural Monument with Libušín, Maměnka and Zvonice

The Pustevny complex has been designated a national cultural monument since 1995. The cultural heritage complex includes the dominant buildings Libušín, Maměnka and Zvonice. Together, they form a unique ensemble of Art Nouveau buildings by the Slovak architect Dušan Samuel Jurkovič from the late 19th century. The architecture is therefore not merely an addition to the trails and winter sports activities, but a reason in its own right to consider Pustevny more closely as a travel destination.

The history of Libušín is also part of the area: after the fire in 2014, the building was reconstructed through scientific reconstruction. The same materials and artisanal methods as more than one hundred years ago were used in the process. Every January, Pustevny also hosts an exhibition of ice and snow sculptures, which has a long-standing tradition.

Getting There and Views

Pustevny can be reached by cable car, bicycle, on foot, by bus or by car. The Stezka Valaška observation tower offers an additional viewpoint: its top floor is located at 1,099 metres above sea level and offers views up to 100 kilometres away.
