Hovězí – Valley, Trails and Regional Traditions

Hovězí lies in a valley formed by the Vsetínská Bečva and its tributaries, the Hořanský and Hovízský. South of the village rises Mount Filka, reaching an elevation of 769 m. Together with marked trails, cycling routes, and a distinctive local culture, this creates a destination for anyone who wants to combine the landscape with regional discoveries.

Marked trails between the railway station, Filka, and the Bečva

A yellow-marked route leads from Hovězí railway station to Filka. It is 5.5 km long and climbs 340 metres in elevation. Hovězí therefore offers a clearly described hiking connection to a prominent mountain south of the village. In addition, marked routes lead from Hovězí for hiking, cycling, and cross-country skiing in winter. Depending on the desired itinerary, nature experiences and active routes can thus take centre stage, without the village serving merely as a place to pass through.

The cycling routes also offer different distances. The Vsetínská Bečva section is 56.8 km long. An approximately 30 km section between Vsetín and Velké Karlovice runs mostly along a cycle path closed to motor traffic and is also suitable for inline skating. There is also a 51 km cycling route via Vsetín, Ústí, Hovězí, Huslenky, Halenkov, Nový Hrozenkov, Karolinka, Velké Karlovice, Miloňov, Třeštík, Bařiny, and Martinák. Those choosing accommodation in Hovězí can therefore decide whether to focus on a hike to Filka, a cycling stage, or the regional routes along the Bečva.

Church, village square, and local history

The history of Hovězí is reflected in several notable architectural and artistic works. The church was built in 1734 in place of an older wooden church as a new masonry structure with a wooden tower. After the tower became unstable due to the ringing of the bells, it was replaced by a masonry tower in 1891. Next to the church stands a Baroque stone cross dating from 1792.

A statue of Saint John of Nepomuk from 1776 on the village square recalls the area's older religious art. The local history also includes the Calvary group depicting the Virgin Mary and Saint John. It was transferred from Olomouc to Hovězí in 1858. Alongside hiking and cycling, these landmarks give a stay a cultural dimension without requiring a separate town programme.

Events, crafts, and regional flavours

Hovězí also has a lively events calendar. It includes a brass-band music show, a regional theatre showcase, and a two-day showcase of ensembles from across Horní Vsacko. The annual theatre showcase brings together amateur and semi-professional theatre productions. For travel planning, this means that depending on the dates, a stay can be shaped not only by the landscape and outdoor activities, but also by music and stage culture.

One particular tradition is a traditional masked procession featuring a bear, which concludes a firefighters' ball with the ceremonial burial of the double bass. The Kateřinský jarmark combines market stalls, a traditional pig slaughter, food, the traditional figures of Lucky and the Devil, a cultural programme, and demonstrations of folk crafts. Other attractions for visitors include wine and slivovitz tastings.

There are also refreshments in Hovězí along the Bečva Bevlava Bečva route, at the weir near Koliba. This makes it possible to combine the regional character of the village with a cycling or day-trip stage. Hovězí is therefore particularly well suited to a trip in which nature trails, local history, events, and local traditions are considered together rather than separately.
