Kámen U Pacova

Kámen U Pacova combines a distinctive castle complex with Baroque sacred art, a publicly accessible park and paths through forest and open landscapes. Those who want to bring together different interests on their trip will find several distinct themes here: the history of Hrad Kámen, historic motorcycles, the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows, as well as a hiking trail and a cycle route.

Hrad Kámen: Castle, History and Motorcycles

The originally Gothic Hrad Kámen Castle was founded at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries. It was named after the distinctive rocky promontory on which it was built. Historically, Hrad Kámen played an important role as a Hussite stronghold between Tábor and Pelhřimov. The site therefore brings together the architectural setting on the rock and the political history of the region.

Three guided tour routes are open to visitors: the Old Palace, Life in the 19th and Early 20th Centuries, and the Motorcycles tour. The exhibition of historic motorcycles is one of the oldest specialized motorcycle exhibitions in the Czech Republic. The present-day collection also includes a staff motorcycle from 1910. The three tours focus on different aspects, making it possible to get to know the castle not only as a historic building, but also through its residential and technological history.

Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows

Another cultural highlight is the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows. It is one of the most significant Baroque religious buildings in the Pelhřimov area. Its original purpose was primarily to serve as a representative family crypt for the Malovec family. An exceptionally valuable collection of early Baroque furnishings has been preserved inside. A visit complements the castle tour with a sacred and art-historical dimension, although the two sights do not have the same character.

Park, Notable Trees and Paths

The park at Hrad Kámen is open throughout the entire season and freely accessible to the public. An alpine garden was established on the castle’s rock massif. The grounds also contain a Nootka cypress (Chamaecyparis nootkatensis) and a purple-leaved European beech (Fagus sylvatica f. purpurea), which were designated as memorial trees in 2001.

A botanical curiosity in the village is the so-called Lípa v lípě. It is a lime tree growing within the remains of its original parent lime tree. The tree stands below the castle grounds in the village centre. Exploring Kámen therefore leads not only to the castle complex, but also to an unusual natural phenomenon within the village landscape.

For those arriving on foot, the red-marked hiking trail from Pacov to Hrad Kámen is important. It connects Pacov railway station with Hrad Kámen and passes through sections of forest and open landscape. Those who want to explore the surroundings by bicycle can also consider Cycle Route 321. It runs between Kamenice nad Lipou and Mezilesí, passing through Kámen along the way. The two routes thus provide different ways of accessing the village, without assuming any distances or travel times.
