Discover Bohdalín

Bohdalín combines historic memorial sites, religious landmarks, a natural swimming area, and an unusual open-air museum dedicated to the Iron Curtain. History between the town’s name and its memorial sites

Bohdalín was first mentioned in 1379. At that time, the place was known as Bohdalovo pole. Local attractions also include a memorial to the victims of the First World War. It commemorates the losses of that period and forms a distinct point of interest within the town.

Pilgrimage Site and Chapels

Another special point of interest is Váňova studánka, a pilgrimage site in Bohdalín. A chapel with an image of the Virgin Mary is located at Váňova studánka. Religious tradition and the specific history of a small sacred building thus come together at this site. The Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk in Bohdalín also has an interesting history. The museum includes an observation tower with a view, an underground bunker, a machine-gun emplacement, traces of a signal wall and a trench, as well as original boundary stones. A small observation tower was created from a former border observation post. Together, these elements form part of the site and combine visible structural remains with traces of the former border security system. The boundary stones document the former marking of the border area.

For your visit, you are not choosing a classic indoor exhibition, but rather an area with preserved or recognizable traces of the past. The open-air museum complements the chapels and memorial with a more recent historical layer and gives Bohdalín a distinct cultural and historical character.

Nature at Fýfar Pond

Nature is also part of the townscape. Fýfar Pond offers opportunities for swimming in nature. This creates a different focus from the historical sites: after visiting the memorial, chapels, or open-air museum, the pond offers an opportunity to spend time by the water. A Vanished Mill

The history of the town also includes the former Bohdalínský, Fejfarův mlýn (Feifar Mill). It burned down in 1921 after being struck by lightning and was not rebuilt. The mill should therefore be understood as a former historic site, not as a building that still exists today. Its history adds an example of a building that has disappeared from the townscape to the visible memorial sites.
