Discover Volevčice: Church, Village History and Unique Flora

Volevčice combines visible architectural history, an archaeologically documented past and unique flora. The first written mention dates from 1333. At the same time, despite the development of nearby lignite mining in the 19th century, the village remained shaped by agriculture. This gives you a destination whose history can be experienced not only through dates, but also through architecture, traces of settlement and the landscape.

Church and Local History

The single-nave Church of Saint Procopius is part of the local history. It was built in 1840 on the site of a Gothic church dedicated to Saint Gall. The church combines a preserved imposing Late Gothic tower with a Neo-Romanesque nave and presbytery asymmetrically attached to the tower in 1840. The nave is the elongated main space of the church; the presbytery refers to the adjoining area of the chancel. Since 7 October 2021, the Church of Saint Procopius has been protected as a cultural monument.

Around the middle of the 13th century, a medieval settlement arose southwest of the present-day municipality, within the municipal area, and has been archaeologically documented. The settlement therefore predates the first written mention of Volevčice. The abandoned medieval settlement was buried beneath a layer of mud approximately 70 cm thick. In addition to its visible church, Volevčice therefore offers an unusual historical reference point that reaches beyond the first written mention.

Landscape with Unique Flora

Velká Volavka, an important site of halophytic flora, is located near Volevčice. Halophytic plants tolerate salt; at the foot of Velká Volavka, salinization of the clay causes plants to become stunted. This is the only surviving site of sea plantain (Plantago maritima) in the Most District. When choosing ideas for day trips, therefore, the focus is not only on general impressions of the landscape, but also on specifically described plants and unique site conditions.

Everyday Life and Getting There

The local ice-skating area is used in summer as a football, nohejbal and volleyball court.

When planning your journey, you must take a specific time window into account: Due to the complete closure of the bridge between Volevčice and Bečov, bus route 545 will not operate from 16 March 2026 to 31 October 2026. The municipality of Volevčice also provides a transport page with separate links to ČD timetables for trains and to bus timetables. For your travel period, therefore, check the appropriate connection rather than relying solely on a general statement about the bus route.

Another specific point of reference is the library in Volevčice: its lending hours are on Thursdays from 5 to 6 p.m. This fixed appointment complements the historical and natural-history topics with an insight into the local weekly rhythm.
