The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is a three-nave Gothic-Renaissance church dating from the 15th century. Parts of the former town fortifications have been preserved at the church. The later-added Salhausen Chapel also forms part of the church complex. Several Renaissance and Baroque tomb monuments can be seen around the chapel. This brings together various traces of the town’s history in one place, which can be consciously connected during a walk.

A 14.6-metre-high Baroque sandstone Marian column dating from 1742 stands on the main square. The square thus provides another specific landmark in the historic centre and complements the castle and church architecture with an independent monument.

Historic centre and views over the landscape

A walk through the historic centre of Benešov Nad Ploučnicí takes you along narrow streets. Their atmosphere is shaped by the town’s history of several fires, plague epidemics and military occupations. If you would like to combine your stay with a scenic viewpoint, you can reach the viewpoint on Sokolský vrch from the main square in about 15 minutes on foot, south of the square. The viewpoint is accessible via a marked hiking trail and is freely accessible.

The protected landscape provides the setting for a trip in which not only the town’s buildings but also trails and views play a role. The Havraní kameny nature trail leads from Benešov Nad Ploučnicí via Ovesná and Jedlka to Malá Veleň. Its route offers another opportunity to connect the town with the surrounding landscape and several stops along the way.
