Těchlovice combines a distinctive church complex with the landscape and history around Vrabinec. The Labská Cycle Route also passes through the village. First consider which of these will shape your stay.

Landscape and Vrabinec

Těchlovice lies in the České středohoří Protected Landscape Area. At Vrabinec, the remains of a medieval castle lie among several volcanic vents. The specially protected area includes communities of heat-loving plants and animals on rocks, scree slopes and in scree forests around an exposed basalt vent. Here, geological formations and castle ruins meet: Vrabinec is shaped both by its volcanic form and by traces of the old castle. “Heat-loving” describes species that prefer warm locations. Rocks and scree slopes provide habitats different from those found in scree forests. Thus, both rocky areas and wooded areas are part of the site’s ecological character.

Church and local history

The Church of St John the Baptist, together with an enclosing wall, two gates and a mortuary, forms a unified complex. The church is a prominent landmark in the wider area. It has a single nave; the presbytery faces east, while a prismatic tower stands at the southwest corner of the nave. The church complex can therefore be understood both through its place in the village landscape and through specific architectural features. “Single-nave” describes a church space without side aisles. The nave is its main space, and the presbytery is the chancel area. Its eastward orientation and the tower at the southwest corner locate two prominent parts of the building on different sides. This makes the church’s layout easier to understand spatially.

Těchlovice’s development was linked to the heyday of steam navigation on the Elbe, a shipyard, fruit exports and the construction of the Austrian Northwestern Railway. Archaeological finds also offer insight into different periods of the village’s history. The Těchlovice hoard is estimated to be 4,000 years old; it was found in 1881 during construction of the station building. In Přední Lhota, a burial site from the Lusatian culture was found on the slope leading to Vrabinec.
