Discover Svitávka

Svitávka brings together landscape, geology and culture within a small area. The town lies in the widened Svitava Valley and belongs to the Malá Haná region. The boundary of the Boskovice Furrow tectonic depression runs immediately to the west. Svitávka therefore offers a distinctive landscape setting for a trip in which you want not only to visit a place, but also to discover its geological and historical features.

Landscape around Svitávka

A prominent landmark is Hradisko, a wooded hill directly above Svitávka. It lies above the confluence of the Svitava and the Semíč stream. Visible foundations of a medieval watchtower and the remains of a chapel have been preserved at the summit. The route there thus combines the landscape with visible traces of the past.

Geology is also one of the area's special features. Along the walking route to Hradisko, information panel no. 4 provides information about the geology of Hradisko and the morphology of the surrounding area. Numerous fossils can be found in several shale outcrops on the eastern slope of Hradisko, including the rare fossil of a Permian arachnid. Those who enjoy looking more closely on an outing will therefore find more here than simply a view of the surrounding landscape.

Cultural Monuments and Museum

The Church of St. John the Baptist provides a distinct historical accent in the townscape. The Baroque building dates from 1703. The square in Svitávka is also home to a statue of St. John of Nepomuk. It is a cultural monument and a prominent landmark of the square.

Another focal point is the Löw-Beer estate, which houses the Svitávka Museum. The museum documents the history of the Svitávka area from the Permian period through medieval settlement to the present day. The exhibition also includes films about the history of Svitávka that school students can watch. This makes it possible to combine a museum visit with an accessible introduction to the development of the area.

The town's history also includes two representative Löw-Beer villas, where the family lived for some time. The large Löw-Beer Villa has an almost château-like appearance with Baroque and Neoclassical elements. Together with the museum, the parish church and the square with the statue of St. John of Nepomuk, they form a distinct cultural focus for your stay.
